sadescription Canyon Time
15mn34   color   stéréo   2007   United Kingdom
by Richard O'Sullivan
Canyon Time reflects back on one of the older themes of video art: time. The film seeks to dramatize the contrast between the slow moving time of the natural world and the fleetingness of the human moment. Close-ups of disease in plants – which show them as both alive and dead, between times and states – juxtapose with images that capture the brief life of a moment of experience or interaction between people. The piece explores the medium’s ability to make time palpable.

Rhythmically, 76 wine bottles are un-smashed and re-collected and appear to magnetically re-form from the floor, through the air, to the hand, to the table. Cerebratorium is a 2007 production, created in a vacant space of a former psychiatric asylum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The movie started from dreams and drawings and became data. I used to dream in wonderful long narratives, surrealistic stories which had their own hermetic logic and secret meanings. I drew each one of these as they came up and began to construct a storyboard...

Ferndale, Western Canyon, Los Angeles, is a portrait of an area of Griffith Park in LA. The work explores the contrast of ‘real’ and ‘fake’ places, and my thinking has been influenced by Baudrillard’s concept of simulation. Ferndale is a constructed, watery oasis set amongst the brittle aridity of Griffith Park, but is it any more of a simulation than the supposed wilderness of Griffith, or the city itself ?

In Rome, policemen are all around in the city. Each tourisitic site has its own security staff, to compfort the visitors, but also to frighten them. The title of this video refers to Berlusconi's party (forza italia) and to playmobil, because their uniforms remind me of this child's games. Through individual portraits I draw a collective one. Behind their uniform, men and women play their role. Through a wider angle, this series allows me to refer to man and its loss of singularity.

18mn18   color   stéréo   2007   Scotland

Peloton was made for the Radiance Festival, Glasgow November 2007. The work, a form of social sculpture was a nocturnal performance in Kelvingrove Park in which a group of cyclists (20+) rode bikes fitted with a blue neon tube activated by the rider’s forward motion. Sir William Ramsay (1852-1916) discovered neon at this site in 1898. Collectively the choreographed cyclists gradually illuminate the black space of the park into a vortex of blue light. Projected in a partially derelict urban site in the Cities East End, the film became a portable cipher for time, energy and unidentifiable presence.

Space litter orbits around the Earth in the last shot. Its length is the amount of time you need to have a coffee, smoke a cigarette and read the paper at the bar of the café, while the frivolity of the TV ads blasts your ears. But the Universe trembles when we take the sound off the publicity and add it to the terrible photographes from the newspaper. Pó de estrelas is a critique of the Society of the Spectacle...

by Richard O'Sullivan
Present Tense juxtaposes 8mm tourist footage - taken from the top of the World Trade Centre prior to its destruction - with later video of that same footage playing in the 8mm camera on which it was shot. The piece serves to demonstrate the illusory power of video’s immediacy, its feeling of ‘present tense’. Even though we are aware that the twin towers no longer exist, and are implicitly reminded of that fact through the elegiac replaying of the 8mm footage on the camera, we cannot resist sinking into the raw ‘now-ness’ of the shaky images from atop the towers. For a moment we forget where we stand in history.

TEN 00:10:00 is an experimental video that features found online video footage depicting ten national and international events that have occurred since the year 2000. Each event is one-minute in length and is rendered in slow motion. Online video sources were actively sought, so that the footage would be of a low-res quality. The intent is that the blurred or bitmapped images of these violent man-made or naturally occurring events, become almost surreal and beautiful in shifting shapes of color and form. The video also investigates alternate avenues of media sources that are not dominated by major media outlets and begin to legitimate contemporary technologies such as cell phone cameras and file sharing. There is no audio accompanying the video so that emphasis remains on the slow moving imagery.

Coming from the disco, full of the impressions of that juicy girl or that horny boy, doubtful of whether preserving innocence or following the instinct for an outstanding erotic adventure. It is the moment of not yet knowing, vacillating between yes or no. It is a same ritual each week-end, even if decisions are made once. It is a game between identifying and identity.
