sadescription ...niland 1
13mn11   color   stereo   2009   Spain
by Marius Leneweit & Rocio Rodriguez
"...niland 1" builds new landscapes on the sea, the center of which is the breathing between water and tornades currents, a fight for air being interrupted by a mere decline of the water level, allowing the shining of the water surface line. "...niland" tells unreasonably through pictures, lets us imagine events, persists on searching and remains uncertain. "...niland" is built on the separating line of both water and air being symbolically related to the emotions and common sense; a diffuse fleeting glance of a interline that we cross through from side to side.

by Lynne Sachs
I began reading Virgil's "Georgics", a 1st Century epic agricultural poem, and knew immediately that I needed to create a visual equivalent about my own relationship to the place where I live, New York City. The film is culled from material I collected at Coney Island, the Lower East Side, Socrates Sculpture Garden in Queens, a Brooklyn community garden and a place on Staten Island that is so dark you can see the three moons of Jupiter. It is a homage to a place many people affectionately and mysteriously call the big apple.

Few times a week we used to go to visit my grandparents in an other village five kilometers south from where we lived. My grandparents were nice people, old farmers very friendly and hilarious. They were my mother's father and mother and even if she used to say that they did not treat her good when she was a kid I had nothing against them. They lived in an old house in the countryside with lots of animals. I remember that single day because while my mother was chatting with her mother and my grandfather was out, I sneaked into my uncle's room and by chance I found under his bed a porn magazine.

"Profanations" is a three channel video work consisting of appropriation and reconstruction of images and sequences from films by Jules Marey, Pudovkin, Kirsanoff, Eisenstein, Romero, Halpern, Kulechov ... from which a series of micro-stories have been created. These stories have been organized according to Campanas De Luz ( Light Bells ), a music composition by Riera Robuste. "Profanations" emerges from an interest in exploring relationships between sound and image with narratives and abstraction, playing with the [dis]articulation found in film narratives; creating a rupture within narrative and representation.

"Seven kilometres from here" is an experimental portrait of Ingeniero White, a coastal town in the south of Argentina. In the last decades, this port has changed dramatically since a large petrochemical complex was built there. In this work we try to establish a connection between old domestic films, and industrial sounds recently recorded. Silent Super 8 movies, on one hand; digital hi-fi capture of engines roar and workers wishpers, on the other; and between them, the chance to process the audiovisual archive for a future memory.

In this piece the "over the rainbow" sequence from The Wizard of Oz moves forward from the beginning and backwards from the end in half second intercuts. This gradually builds to a 25 voice split-screen canon in which each voice is slightly out of sync. The resulting matrix is mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic.
