...niland 1
13mn11 color stéréo 2009
Spain
by Marius
Leneweit
& Rocio
Rodriguez
"...niland 1" builds new landscapes on the sea, the center of which is the breathing between water and tornades currents, a fight for air being interrupted by a mere decline of the water level, allowing the shining of the water surface line. "...niland" tells unreasonably through pictures, lets us imagine events, persists on searching and remains uncertain. "...niland" is built on the separating line of both water and air being symbolically related to the emotions and common sense; a diffuse fleeting glance of a interline that we cross through from side to side.

by Silvia
Giambrone
In the attempt to offer a critical plattform from which to approach the video. I would lay emphasis on the original questions that inspired my work in this occasion. Is time, beside common perceptions, besides the narratives that media so easily tend to foster, really a monolithic institution? What does it happen when we try to unpack time? Can we apply to time the same tools we normally deploy when questioning the monolithic representation of space, for instance by using the play of perspective, direction, and illusion?...

Using images of an ocean voyage on a double-outrigger boat, “Banca” explores the sights and sentiments of this journey, juxtaposing the emotional stirrings of both unseen passenger and viewer, of the cresting thrill, the fear, excitement and the loneliness with the terrible beauty, elegance and majesty of the sea.

Beach
9mn47 color stéréo 2007
Italy
by Pietro
Mele
In the summer avalanche of tourists precipitate on this beach. Although it is shown in a grey winter day, we can clearly see the traces of the last touristic season on the sand... A subliminal text (an advertising from a note tourist agency), acts as a counterpoint to the desolation of the show. So the text about a Sardinia as an "Holidays dream" absurdly contrasts with a much less exciting reality, made up of a consumeristic and barbaric mass tourism.

It is a conceptual image work, like a dictionary, presenting in the way of Chinese tradition scrolls. The various Chinese people: worker, policemen, emperor of Qing Dynasty, the intellectuals, monk, old people, children, beggar, farmer worker, judge, etc. have been imaged with their most remarkable characters, morals and habitualness. In this film, through the stare between you and them just like a photograph, you’ll wait for an certain thing happen in a quiescent time and space. And the thing is an image interaction relationship of conflict, counterwork and dialogue.

It further symbolizes how humans consume meat and wear the skins of animals that they slay.

I began reading Virgil's "Georgics", a 1st Century epic agricultural poem, and knew immediately that I needed to create a visual equivalent about my own relationship to the place where I live, New York City. The film is culled from material I collected at Coney Island, the Lower East Side, Socrates Sculpture Garden in Queens, a Brooklyn community garden and a place on Staten Island that is so dark you can see the three moons of Jupiter. It is a homage to a place many people affectionately and mysteriously call the big apple.

by Suzanne

In Memories at the Banff Springs Hotel, I am asking random people if they could share a special memory with me. I do not specify what the memory should be; this is left open to their interpretation. With this piece I was also interested in the construction of a memory. The last person whom I speak with appears to be constructing a memory in order to continue this interaction with me. He has to pause and think hard about his memory, leaving me to question if this was an actual memory or something that he has adapted or restructured during our conversation. How much of this memory is referencing an actual event. I am interested in how memories can change overtime in response to people's ongoing experiences and circumstances. Memories appear to at least be partially constructed in response to people's fears, wishes, and desires.

The film "Outside" is a work from the “simple” experience of observing Chinese life, a document of outdoor performances in Beijing 24-hour street life. It documents the day-to-day process or act of filmmaking. Perhaps it can be best described as an observer’s view of Beijing as it is today. Scenes of what foreigners and certainly tourist travellers may pick up of this huge and sprawling metropolis. Completely observatory in nature, this film is not a social criticism or a cry for help. It could thus be interpreted as an ethnographic study of movement in contemporary Beijing.

"Profanations" is a three channel video work consisting of appropriation and reconstruction of images and sequences from films by Jules Marey, Pudovkin, Kirsanoff, Eisenstein, Romero, Halpern, Kulechov ... from which a series of micro-stories have been created. These stories have been organized according to Campanas De Luz ( Light Bells ), a music composition by Riera Robuste. "Profanations" emerges from an interest in exploring relationships between sound and image with narratives and abstraction, playing with the [dis]articulation found in film narratives; creating a rupture within narrative and representation.

This performance centres on a transaction or exchange. I have gone to a convenience store during my residency in Portugal and created an “activated situation”. In this piece I have asked participants to share a bowl of split pea soup with me. The sharing of soup is used as a pretext for social interaction. As the piece continues the lines are blurred and there is confusion about what role each of us belong to. On this occasion I am examining how our individual needs and freedoms are altered on a daily basis as we move between public and commercial spaces. The audience is invited to re-evaluate what they think is permissive and the preconceived ideas of normalcy.

The piece called "The Encounter" was made at "Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery", 2008. In this piece I have asked participants to describe a special place/location. I previously created a series of plaster objects, which were given in exchange for each interaction I performed. After these conversations I gave a souvenir that I have produced as a gift for them. In exchange for his or her memory I offered each interlocutor a small plaster sculpture that was about the size of a hand-held mobile device. (Each sculpture was unique and based on a commonplace object such as a dime-store figurine or an ornate light switch-plate, altered in accordance with the way I believe memory functions to distort recollected experiences.) This piece reflects upon its own failures to “connect” and thus gains distance from its overt subject matter.
