The filming method used to create this film can best be described as Extemporaneous Film Making. Decisions about what to capture and what not to capture germinated and became themes within a work that documents an odyssey through some of the districts of Seoul, South Korea.

The human need to move from one territory to another has been increases considerably today as a result of globalization. Travel between cities and across borders is one of the most common behaviors, the continuing exodus of communities involves not only the pleasure and tourism, but as goals, seeking a better quality of life based on education and the economy, or in extreme cases involves seeking refuge and asylum. In my case, as a visual artist, travel has become the work itself. Any creative process is in response to the direct influence of where I live, where I am or where i transit. Interest in tackling the trip as an artistic work in different ways, such as photography and video is not only based on observation and interpretation of the movements and spatial and temporal displacements but also the need to adapt the changes that contemporary art have, around the tools that facilitate the integration of necessary information for the artistic work, as the recognition of new spaces, new forms of creation that mutate and become indispensable for the development of artistic processes. As more as i found transient proceses of artwork, appears necessary elements to undertake new and comprehensive models created between time, space and drift.

Each percussive 'CLACK' of the analog switch shifts our perspective, playing equally with camera and mic positioning, separating a/v pairs to create disjunctive relationships. When groups of switches are held down simultaneously, the signals merge to create colorful drifting and massive harmonic drones. From awkward silences to enticing fragmentation, the artist’s presence in the work both engages and repels the viewer, causing reflection on signals in their purest state, no effects, no edits, no way to erase mistakes and vulnerabilities.

After Empire
52mn color & b/w stereo 2010
Belgium
by Herman
Asselberghs
A search for the alternative to an image of meaning, inspired by Antonio Negri’s and Michael Hardt’s "Empire". The insights from this politico-philosophical study on the contemporary world serve as a starting point for a reflection on positive forms of collective resistance and emancipatory representations in times of war. An adaptation that doesn’t aim to be an illustration of "Empire" but that reworks it in the light of the 9/11 heritage. "After Empire" considers a possible alternative for the iconic image that our collective memory has kept as the quintessential moment of recent history: the hijacked plane hitting the second tower. The alternative: the 15th of February 2003. On that day 30 million citizens across the planet marched against the unilateral decision by the American government to start a pre-emptive war against Iraq under the auspices of “the war on terrorism”. 2/15 was the greatest peace demonstration since the Vietnam war and probably the biggest protest march ever to take place. The war did happen, but this world day of resistance could very well mark the beginning of the 21st century. 2/15 instead of 9/11: a key date in the writing of a history of global contestation in the struggle between two superpowers: the United States against public opinion worldwide. Breaking Up Is Hard to Do
11mn color stereo 2011
United Kingdom
by Hannah
Beadman
"Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" evokes such loss and anxiety. Landscapes are internal, psychological. Melodrama is used as a manageable sentimental site. Arrested, moving canvases are a replayed accident: reflecting, refocusing, and reappropriating re-membered Self-parts. These environments are facets, the last drawing on Constructivism’s antithesis to Modernism, as earthing, rebuilding, to conclude as a narrative. Each environment is a facet of experience, while the last canvas draws on Russian Constructivism’s antithesis to Modernism, as earthing, building, retrieval of parts, to conclude as a narrative.

Time, Space, Word and Memory converge to create a sci-fi experimental narrative of "two star-crossed lovers" sending messages through wormholes and light years; atomized messages in a digital bottle. Comprised of scenes shot on HD, super 8 and public domain science films assembled into inter-galactic "love letters" or "messages". The two "actors" are caught in a spacetime continuum as they attempt to communicate through digital messages that are cut off, disrupted and displaced.

Here the narratives that are woven into our everyday environment are pulled and stretched to reveal and repeat themselves in the hope that though this we can become actors in our own life.

Capsule
5mn28 color stereo 2010

by Shereen
Soliman
Time is relentless. I'm worried, watching a puddle of water invisibly evaporate before my eyes, asking myself what will remain as I deal with the fallout of an ancestry that is slowly, mercilessly vanishing from this earth. I miss their bodily presence but that's not the only sorrow I feel. I grieve the loss of guided wisdoms, collective histories and the stories I was never told. Filmed over a period of two months in late 2008 as I helplessly watched my mother lose her battle with cancer, the single channel video. Capsule is a personal journey as well as an urgent inventory of the precious, final moments I wished to collect and suspend in time. Past blends with present as bedtime stories, children's toys and old photographs attempt to counter the distressing reality of syringes, bandages, get-well cards, and the last birthday we celebrated together as a family.

Correspondances
13mn13 color stereo 2011
Germany
by Jean-François
Guiton
"Correspondances" (matches) is to be taken in every sense of the word. The film begins in the subways of various cities. An escalator takes you from Barcelona to Kyoto via Berlin. Images of the world sent by a press correspondent, anecdotes told in letters to friends, to relatives, from a correspondent. But they are also the coïncidences between the images and the sounds which, sliding over each other, seem to have affinities, to create links, to make sense. Sense yet always fugitive, already other before being really intelligible. Moving strata of images spread a part of the illusions that we share in our constant search for concordances, correlations and harmony.

Déraciné
10mn45 color stereo 2012
Canada
by Isabelle
Hayeur
Recent technological changes have transformed natural and rural environments, to the point of producing uniform, ever-more polluted environments in their stead. Uprooted probes these territories fashioned by man, deciphering in them his relationship to his environment, thereby questioning his ways of being. Critical of environmental and urban developments, this video explores the peripheries of some North American cities, strangely alike from one to the next, in that none of them feels like somewhere. Their excessively wide spaces, standardized and shapeless, generate a sense of uneasiness. Urban upheavals can turn the most familiar locale into an unrecognizable, anonymous, even forbidding place. On this blank slate, local memory is forever erased.

Filming people without a camera. Compacted, contracted, molded, kneaded, accelerated, multiplied, chained, unchained, exploded, cut up, tortured, ... .. the "Slices of Life" grind up human, to life, to death and to love. A real "shopping of life" among all the shelves of supermarkets and corner stores of the everyday life staging. Film sequences, known or not, they are gone somewhere else to play a score that wasn't their. As in music, the tone of a film is expressed by the force of its own leitmotiv, by the almost hypnotic repetition of the simple measure of his purpose. This film is also a video installation.

Bowman
"Je pense à toi, Mon Amour" is about complex passions artists experience with things (such as Cezanne's Ste. Victoire) that stimulate them to make art using these "things" that they love so much as vehicles to project "their selves" by way of the resultant work of art. "Je pense à toi, Mon Amour" takes a look at the emotions viewers of art experience in viewing works of "art-things" forever viewed differently through the possession of that object through the psyche of the artist's creative processing.

One image only appears and disappears: that of an anti-lope which grazes. It trembles all along. A feeling of instability settles. Always disappearing, it is the memory of a peaceful and natural moment, remote, which comes and goes from the surface in stages, in pieces. This constructed image reflects our split up feelings, activated by our manipulated and organized contemporary views. "Lamento" stands for a heart impregnated with nostalgia for the calm, for the simple, for time that is stretched.

"A violent wind generates the images. The atmosphere is air tight (and stale?). Silent bodies in front of the mirror. The ritual of small repetitive gestures opens the scene at the hairdressers. In an unpredictable and fragile present, the traces of a past world hussle themselves within carved faces. The storm quiets itself. A slow lethargy takes over everyday life: some people are eating, singing, playing ,some are walking in the sculpted out spaces. These lives are silenced by slowly sinking into the ordinary world, bodies swinging themselves at the gates of deep sleep. Then, one day, humanity wakes up and crosses over to the exterior side. Armed with wise gestures and precious postures, they watch with a smile an uneasy world falling apart. The event has already taken place. The last men are standing straight as trees, eternal survivors witnessing the disaster of the absent world within the world. From this consistant and unchangeable absence, these last men save the images." – Nikki Giannari

"Private Views" creates a parallel between two starkly different worlds: the wretchedness of the destitute and the conspicuous consumer lifestyle of the nouveaux rich. The video explores the themes of social inequalities, real estate speculation, and dispossession. It documents the decline of some North American cities and casts a critical eye on the emergence of wealthy new suburbs. These private residential enclaves are often gated and under surveillance. Their luxury homes, with their dubious architectural style, are the reflection of a world dominated by appearances, consumption, and social conformity.

During each of these re-enactments I recruited participants from the local community to help in the re-creation of the work, in this instance it was film in Quebec, City. Each piece can be seen as deterritorializing of the original scripts when the participants (actors) use the original material to re-create a new piece and through this process they also re-territorialize the work.

On the metro, by foot, on a bus, on a taxi, following the crowd or walking in the opposite direction, by day and by night. SANS SOMMEIL is a short film made up of still images with live sound recording. It is a visual and sound journey across Paris, as a subjective sample of a 24-hour cycle including accelerations, pauses, silences. Whether she crosses a hectic market place or a never-ending underground corridor, whether she gets lost among the crowd or wanders through the night-time desert of a city fast asleep, the director attempts to decipher the language of the city, to escape its chaos so as to better unveil its secret poetry. From 7 am to 7 am the next morning, with no sleep.

The beautiful language is rich in text and images, but it is hard to read. The cut-up technique, popularised in William Burroughs' texts is applied here to the images, with fragments of fraught exchanges appearing in a non-linear fashion. The images are taken from L'enfant sauvage ("The Wild Child"), François Truffaut's 1970 film, based on the true story, from the end of the 18th century, of an "uncivilised" boy being taken in by a doctor and studied as a specimen of difference. The images chosen for "The beautiful language" show the child being measured, taught and tested.

Stumbling upon sun bleached bullet-riddled vintage porn sequestered in hidden desert nooks and sagebrush, circuit boards and shattered glass along off-the-path shooting ranges, rotting cow parts in ritual-like mounds, a prophet’s omniscient and culpable gaze; contemplating ideology and place, attempting to apply memory to moving image.

"VNTR" is a chimera between fine arts photography and genetics. A musician and a photographer merged sound design, images and DNA sequences to construct an audio-visual experience. Such experience recreates a hidden interaction between hidden patterns among personal aesthetics, and the never-ending human search for taxonomic classification methods.

Whalen
An ominous beat resonates through this video work as a woman protests from inside a glass enclosure. The action is sparse, raw, and increasingly gritty the longer the woman remains captive. In the company of only her reflection, with all essential needs met, it can go on and on- a lonesome hustle, her laborious will. This is a work about downsides for the spent and wearied when realizing that base requirements are not at all enough.
