A member of the matriculating cancer makes a movie for his friends that projects fantasies of rape. A matriculating cancer is a bourgeoisie counter-culture that fails to counter anything. This is an attack at the sphere of media representation that objectifies, degrades, and negates the human soul's capacity for empathy and empowers the white male hegemony that in turn profits from rape. This is an attack at the systems of negation meant to sow apathy and disinterest for the sake of celebrating The Pleasure Principle and the Digital Sickness.

A brief, poetic 16mm film on a simple sculptural action. What becomes apparent is the humor possible in material interactions and the tender and sometimes melodramatic symbolism of cut flowers. What begins as a reverence for natural beauty ends up pointing towards the abstract expressionism and color field work of high modernism which, in many cases eschewed the banality of such ‘natural’ beauty. The collaged soundtrack suggests weightier concerns, gently insistent behind the flatness of the utilitarian sounds of ripping tape.

2018 Official Rotterdam International Film Festival Selection An avant-garde is a front line. This is a work for the regeneration of the avant-garde. This is a media-fashioned attack aimed at the disturbing omnipotence of hyperrealism and fascist banality - best symbolized by Donald Trump's burning latex effigy. This is a violent collage - shreds of simulacral tumult, a riot in media waste. Meant to be projected anywhere - as a call to arms, a way to incite, an attempt at shaking the normalization of bigotry and authoritarianism. This is a call to #Revolt more than #Resist. This is not for photo ops. Rather than bathe in the aesthetics of nothingness, it is time to wake up and fight the active evil that radiates from the seat of "power" and alters the real through mediated nihilism.

The tongue-in-cheek title of this brief video is meant to taken literally, not figuratively. My admiration for Kusama’s wonderful art remains firmly intact. I am NOT backing away from her in an aesthetical sense. In this video, however, I am quite literally backing away from one of her enormous canvases in the Clark Art Institute, slowly, with my camera facing the painting, As I shuffle backward from a close-up of a single oval dot on the canvas, more and more oval dots are revealed. Soon, they become a galaxy of dots. Ultimately, the entire huge painting can be seen. However, in my backward move, a series of vertical “windows” opens in the screen, each one showing a different detail of the abstract painting, and each window joining in my slow backward march. With each new window, your spatial relationship to the painting is altered. Once the entire painting is revealed, the camera pans right to give a quick glimpse of the gallery in the museum. And, finally, the vertical “windows” dissolve away.

Natural elements set this scene, as the subject’s luminiferous body contorts and dissipates into the dark landscape. Its position and form changes as it appears to straddle multiple places - the illusion created by nature, the distortions made by the artist.

The action is likely to degenerate into a process of simplification, where we can believe we can establish the right from the left, the right from the stranger, the right from wrong ... but the reality is more complex, an indistinct sea that will stop the process.

Exploring hybrid spaces that have been created through strategy games which reflect the relationships between the virtual and physical world. In these spaces, you have the opportunity to explore a different world or create your own with tools available within this space. This is how the controversy ended over how novelist Jules Verne extraordinary journeys were the end of its era, where it was said that it was no longer possible to travel to unknown places on earth. In “other spaces” man became wandering with space-time scenarios of different and unusual premise in the virtual worlds or redesigning the place with the concept of hybrid spaces in the virtual world but in reality. The project came through walking around the sites and places that got the trait of the hybrid space with the same hypothesis and tools of these spaces in the virtual world of strategy games in which i found several points that have this particular trait. The starting point was a refugee camp in Calais, northwestern France and the site of the Atlantic Wall in Dunkirk. The first part of the project has been carried out in France and the second part in cairo.

It all began when I found a strange video in my iPhone. I mean I haven’t filmed or downloaded it. It appeared out of nowhere. Mamma mia! Something strange got into the holy of holies - my iPhone, the archive of my thoughts, works, memories, and God knows what else. The video was not just "not mine", it was something from another reality, something which I don't usually see in my Facebook news feed or on Internet adjusted to my search preferences. I found the answer rather quickly. It turned out, it was all about WhatsApp settings. They added me to a callanetics group I had started visiting off-line. It turned out that there was a lot of flood in the group that had nothing to do with the subject. However I decided not to change the settings. I liked the element of surprise. Time went on. Other people's videos mixed up with mine and became mine. Finally I got bored. The effect of surprise vanished and I changed my WhatsApp settings. But in order to appropriate others' content I turned it into a work of art.

"Fig._____" draws references from art history by cross-examining the impact past art icons have left through time limiting and colliding with the perception on modern life and its reality. In the form of images present in a book, it questions a contemporary perception on art as it has evolved from past to present, leaving certain ideals outdated yet reflecting on how today's models might seem deceiving as well.

Between film projects and following the birth of his daughter, a Canadian in Paris (Matthew Lancit) must confront his slacker lifestyle and decide if there is something in it worth passing on to the next generation, or if he is better off getting a job. In search of the remaining traces of flâneurs (19th Century wanderers of Paris), he takes his daughter on a series of poetic strolls in which he assumes the role of a contemporary flâneur and crosses the path of people who help reveal the relevance of such a figure today. In the movement back and forth between the filmed streets of Paris and scenes from the domestic life of a young father, a dialectic emerges between a baby experiencing and making sense of the world and these wandering men trying to do the same.

sadescription Flight
11mn12   color & b/w   sil   2018   USA
by Brice Bowman
self-production

FLIGHT symbolically uses airplanes to represent society's effort to experience "something" out-of-body, indeed a spirit that flies. And the spirit still flies after individuals die; their experiences and connections to people as life is lived set to flight contrails existence that enters people known to the individual by way of their sociological activities and family gatherings from this their live extend beyond the life they lived from physical birth to physical death so in that way people live forever or at minimum it can takes decades and decades if not hundreds of years for their spirit to stop being experienced by individuals. In Brice Bowman's film FLIGHT the spreading of human spirit is both achieved and experienced by such sociological ceremonies as dance as archetype and as a means of "flight" from the mundaneness of everyday experiences of life in rituals. Even something as simple as a child using "riding-horse" sets the spirit to flight in the imagination. This notion is father depicted in the film by adults in FLIGHT using model airplanes as they take flight in the film to represent souls taking off into the universe go wherever they go. Also interestingly Brice Bowman once again uses the "in-between moments" in the manner that film captures human activity on film that is, the in-between frames to represent the spirit or souls of the people either while they are alive or as trails of their being after they have flown to the next life. Another provocative symbol in the FLIGHT is the existence of water in the film as a symbolic for the subconscious to make contact with their genealogical heritage as a member of their families and to a larger degree society as a whole. The final scene is about departing the known physical life and passing into "other world".

"Creation of the alchemical siren, an emblem of illumination and the union of the so called feminine and masculine principles, of the body and soul, within the alchemical imaginary. A symbol that represents the alchemical weddings {Hiero Gamos}. Alchemy that I combine with a feminist message, feminism that understands masculinity and femininity as social constructs that each society draws upon depending on its own interests, where we can rebuild these concepts in the way we want it. Opening the possibility that personal growth signifies a necessary break with our child universe, where the starting point of all humans is their assimilation of similarities and differences to the maternal figure, so that we may dare to think of ourselves with a reference that is divine, extending beyond gender – neither masculine nor feminine - real liberation, defined by each in their own way. The video present itself as a pataphysical proposal, find imaginary solutions through art, solutions for liberating the mind from teachings that guide the human brain towards weakness caused by fear, fear of pain, fear of loneliness, fear of sickness. The HIV has never been identified, AIDS is multifactorial, the Cancer understood as a monster that devours mankind and not as a response on the body, the real monsters are organizations that create a universal definition of health according to their own interests, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) financed by Coca-Cola and Nestle, where the body is mapped out like a profitable territory, the body as commodity. I proclaim the divine nature of the human being, not an idea of divinity of “good,” but rather the opposite, a divinity that brings together the forces {light and darkness}. I’m breaking the solar yoke, the harnesses that have fastened us in the construction of all societies, of all religions, when they select their bases, their holy books, excluding or denigrating what is referred to as the feminine. Breaking the yoke of public and private institutions, such as school and family, which only serve to continue this work of differentiation. I do not believe in this difference between man and woman; I believe in the possible transformation of each being in all that we want to transform."

The alternation of schedules and shifts in alternate weeks causes an alteration of the perception of time, meal schedules and sleep. Permanent electrical light in workspaces causes confusion and extranet with respect to timetables and sunlight. The constant noise throughout the day, the lack of communication, repetitive movements, the rhythm of the conveyor belts, the small mobility space, the forced postures, the demands of speed in the execution of the task, the wounds on the hands as a result of the pressure and handling of the knives... all this causes a state of strong stress and anxiety. All the activity is marked by the times from one day to the next in an exact and repetitive way. Succeeding the days in a continuous line divided by invisible weekends. There is a detachment or unfolding of the "I" within a timeless abyss, in which a dance is created, a choreography of self-sufficient women. Life becomes an alienating loop. The rhythm and execution of the film was conceived as the projection of a film, with the idea of creating the perception of an endless loop. The luminous and chromatic changes are differentiating between the external and internal space of L´usine, as well as a retrospection to silent cinema. For the realization of the project I used footages and public domain sounds.

The Rize Creek is part of a large film mapping project of the five urban streams of the city of Lyon initiated in July 2016. These urban streams once had an industrial, economic and social function for the whole city. Today they disappear, abandoned, some in the grip of pollution. My job here is to make a filmed portrait of these streams; from the source to its total disappearance. In this work I seek to take the time to see and to show, to take the time to experience the rhythm of each of these streams, a true metaphor for passing time. Each film is a walk in which we cross landscapes, environments. My films do not try to experience time but to experiment with it.

We filmed in the south of France, at the edge of the Mediterranean sea two comedians, one brother and his sister. They find themselves on an isolated island and try in this loneliness and adulthood to celebrate this changing of the 18 years. They are two figures: brother / sister, couple, friends, isolated bodies. It is a bodily dialogue, human, social, desirable and repulsive. The party is over before she can really start, the characters express no joy, they are lost elsewhere. They never enter the sea, seen as a perilous universe that we look from afar, dreamer. The gray-pink rocks, the water, these natural elements are our scene, our only decoration. The actors are like extracts of an unstoppable, tragic time but caught up in our time by their clothes, their attitudes, their bodies. We film these impersonal identities by asking questions about becoming adults today, being young women, being children, being feminine / masculine.

Film inspired by the 1814 print of Hokusai called The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife (蛸と ) itself inspired by the tale of Princesse Tamatori. This work is part of the shunga (erotic art book) Kinoe No Komatsu which describes the misadventures of a girl diver defying a king dragon, god of the sea, to recover a stolen jewel. From this tragic tale, Hokusai offers a very eroticized vision where the monster is protected by undertaking octopuses seduced by the princess. This video uses data moshing to mix bodies and textures in an underwater arabesque saturated with colors.

The first motel we stop at in Brice Bowman's film "MOTEL" is Argonne Motel which among its references is to the battle of Argonne in north-eastern France known as the Maas-Argonne Offensive. This is a hint as to some of the ideas contemplated in "MOTEL" -- and what Brice Bowman weaves into his films as a whole. With regard to the audio of MOTEL is it the never to be forgotten repetition of sounds from the machine guns role on the battlefield, or is it the sound of the individual sprockets passing through a film gate as each frame of the movie received its brief individual moment of light passing through it in? Or is it the drive-pulley sprockets of a conveyor belt as society is transported forward in time? Or yet perhaps it is a time-slice of consciousness, that is sociological snapshots via flickering images passing through a Keystone, a Bell & Howell, a Sears, a Kodak, or a Bolex camera functioning as phenomenological machines of society? Together family projectors in conjunction with motels have functioned as records of social activity. This is the basis of Brice Bowman's film MOTEL. His film is a heart-beating poetical string of humanity recordings along the finite timeline known as a "life-time". In his film Brice Bowman uses motel rooms as a model of temporary lodgings for society travelling to life's ultimate checkout moment and how we remember them through the movies they made of themselves participating in this life journey. From their recordings we can summon up a re-Viewing of their individual and group trails of passing through the timeline of a temporary existence along the highways of the world as viewed through the film gates of household movie cameras. A literal recording of human consciousness from it earliest moments up until and including their departures.

The editing and audio give a formal key to understand the complexity of interior or exterior landscapes, in order to try and communicate the prophetic or poetic dimension inside every human being.

"And slow down and planted a rose between her teeth". So ends the song interpreted by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue. I reviewed their murderous relationship with the eroticism of a blowjob made with love. Even if the blood seems to flow in the mouth it is the substance of an inversion. For who puts to death who? Is not this the sense of pleasure? The little death as it is said in France? I played on the meaning of an Anglo-Saxon idiomatic expression, I can not divulge it, to open the metaphor of jouissance to sexual creation. The writing of Elisa's desire, her creative ejaculation, is beyond the difference of the sexes, this interminable war. I wanted to return the violence of domination incarnated by the position of the singer kneeling above her, a stone in the hand, and uttering to her "All beauty must die", towards the vitality of the body, pleasure and life.

Space fragments drift through the wide dark space like noctilucent clouds. They are fragmented memories of apparently past childhood days. Memories that are linearly arranged but which irritate because the spaces are incomplete and separated from each other, as if they could no longer be filled and built together by connecting memories or stories. The childhood places seem strangely cool and unused. The spaces and places give only a fleeting reference to dwellings and landscapes, as if the memories have lost their stories. The title also refers to the data clouds in which we store our memories, to which we entrust our data. Data that can be lost, partially deleted or manipulated. The film in the film motif also points to this. Is it still our own memory or just a film composed of fragments that we are looking at.

Comprised of found footage from apartheid era South Africa, "Our Great Day 1967", imagines what a day would look like if black and coloured South Africans had the same rights and privileges afforded to white citizens of the time. Audio for the film was collected in one take on a formerly segregated beach in Cape Town. Despite the filmmakers efforts to integrate the protagonists into areas they were formerly discriminated or excluded from, the painful reminders of the past in the form of domestic worker uniforms and the short or accidentally captured footage of them renders the past inescapable.

"Paysage enseveli" (translatable as "Shrouded landscape") is a work that I have been developing for some years, to explore the concept of Leitmotiv in the visual medium. It is divided in 12 movements (scenes) that reflect an ambience or a feeling of the main character, a woman whose inner voice leads us through the different movements. First, the soundtrack has been built, using sound leitmotivs linked to the voice of the character (humming, laughter, whisper) or to external sources (bells, drone). The image has been built using also the leitmotiv approach, where each visual element is related to an idea or a feeling: the woods symbolize the leitmotiv of the social oppression, the sea/water as the leitmotiv of destruction, the wandering/walking of the character as the leitmotiv of the search for a meaning, the body position (laying down, crouching) as the mood of the character. The text excerpts have been adapted from the novel "Thérèse Desqueyroux" (1927) by François Mauriac, selecting the passages for their poetic rather than narrative content.

An old fashion TV screen starts flickering with colourful abstraction. As a manifestation of the analogue medium itself, noise is let free to express some possible variations. The noisy dance is then fixed on the digital medium. Algorithms destructure the images revealing new shapes, which were hidden in the empty spaces between one frame and the other. Digital noise arises. This conjunction of elements – which are traditionally ignored, by will or by physical/mechanical inability to perceive them – results in a kind of magma bubbling colours. These different forms of noise, now isolated and free from any kind of subject matter, dialectically interact in order to generate a multitude of visual possibilities.

Rosa is an experimental essay documentary film that juxtaposes the life of the filmmaker in two extreme locations (Baghdad and Montana) through three elements of nature: dust, rust and wind. The filmmaker uses these elements as a poetic introduction to navigate memories of his past and to compare them to his Montana present. Narrated in Arabic with distinct conversations in English, Rosa makes the extreme chaos of Baghdad, especially during the war, and the peace of the empty and isolated State of Montana stand out vividly. Shot on miniDV, the film manipulates printed images of Baghdad that become poetically destroyed with water and paint in order to represent vague and distant memories. The film also uses home video style imagery of Montana to represent the present. Both of these techniques overlap and collapse.

Video made around the theme of the inner sense, and the life of a troubled and plural psychic identity. The head becomes cage, and my character is as stuck by his own dilettant desires. His place in the world is vacillating, yet he exists. His relationship to the other is different, the passion that drives him anchor in the earth and away from it at the same time. He tumbles down the steps of his imagination, he thinks, sleeps, goes to bed, and flies away. His doubts are constant, his curiosity about the other is variable, and his solitude wanders. Its interior is an erupting volcano. Here, the black and white is not intended to make the observation pessimistic and gloomy. On the contrary, I see a quiet ballad in a brain that decided to step aside. My character becomes more human than humans. In this, this hypersensitive becomes the center of my attention.

« The chaos theory » consists of a series of video sequences of different dancers downloaded from the Internet. Each sequence follows a predetermined choreography, but by juxtaposing the different sequences the result is disorder, an authentic chaos. The theory of chaos, in mathematics or physics, explains that the result of something depends on different variables and it is impossible to predict what the result of an action will be. In my work, this result is disorganization, although each dancer follows a strict pattern, when they are put together and superimposed, order is transformed into chaos. The audio of the video is composed by the notes of a piano when tuned, following the same pattern of the image, in which something structured is perceived in an anarchic or desynchronized way, the order within the chaos.

Veils of interstellar gases, separated by tens of light-years from each-other, can finally reveal them-selves. Our peculiar point of view inside reality, compresses space in panoramas of time. Our technology squeezes it in the flat surfaces of digital images. The inevitable transformations due to natural forces, are here sustained by the algorithmic storm of digital transposition, in which all can exist at the same time. A new kind of matter, made out of contiguous pixels carrying information from different eras, vibrates, fluctuates, contracts and alternatively expands. This melting of light and dark, present and past, cannot lead us anywhere but to the end of our journey: the beginning.

The film happens on the threshold between the material and the intangible as it asks for the viewer's unique perception and emotional engagement with what is (not) happening in the narrative. The video is at odds with the tendencies in video art and it deals mostly a slow time. The non- linear narrative breaks into fragments but to evoke the imaginary, something that moves our body beyond the physical constraints of mortality. In a way, it's a body metaphysical experience. The musical score was built to evoke both worlds, one as the reflection of the other: the surface and the deep in kind of sound and image alchemy. Loops are horizontal (moving images) and vertical (perception/ film and viewer relationship) expansions of subjectivity (mind) and experience (body).

The idea of the artwork derives from the aesthetics derived from the Greek words aisthesia, which means consciousness, which is the process of the human mind through which to impart the meaning or take off the sensual perceptions received by whatever, but does necessarily mean awareness of the perception of beauty in something or vision means We must be aware that we were born with the raw ability to recognize, or that awareness leads us to review our choice and whether the opposite of perception is the absence of perception and what is the perception and what we have to establish judgments and apply these concepts and determine our sense of the internal.

An immersive experience merging our materialistic surroundings with the strength of nature. Water is omnipresent and shapes the landscapes in a continuous flow. It reaches a peak of harmony and abstraction where only the colour flow is perceivable, like a moving painting where the water current would be a brush.

The surveillance camera and the smartphone, one is passive and the other is active, represent two types of societies, disciplinary society and society of control as described by Gilles Deleuze. Recent advancements in techniques of control have largely blurred the boundary between the two societies. There’s no apparent difference between ruler and subjects, between passive and active, or between input and output. The artist believes the best way to portray this phenomenon is to take images of these surveillance cameras, to feel the surface of them, to analyze and compare the environment where they are placed, to clarify the ways by which they are inserted into the body of the city. Today, people can do anything in China with a smartphone in hand, including having the ability to make payments via services like Wechat or Alipay in even most unimaginable places and situations. A smartphone contains a whole life and has become life itself. Imagine scenes with a whole carriage of passengers, a young employee, a group of girls, all immersed in their smartphones, as the world around them has disappeared.

"The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles" Karl Marx. All this is true, but is it not also the history of Migration. And in fact the History of the Refugee. No matter if you believe in evolution, or some form of creationism. Or if you believe that aliens brought us here, or just messed with the monkeys( like my father once hypothesized to me as a child). Almost all of us are the byproduct of a migration in one form, or another. How many of us live in the same place as we were born, and/or where all our ancestors were born since the dawning of man. Very few I imagine. Growing up in a country created by immigrants, and refugees. How peculiar it is that this anti immigrant, and refugee rhetoric is now our political leaders mantra. This vicious circle of the once oppressed, turning into the oppressor of the now. Every layer of this video is related in some way to Refugees, Immigration, Migration, and the clash of cultures that ensues. Thrown together like those first early immigrants on Ellis island.

Analytical, emotional and poetical, the commentator seeks access to the world through images. The individual parts do not have to be played one after the other or in this order. Depending on the context, it may be useful to show only single parts.
