Broken Windows consists of the last footage shot with my digital camcorder; these are the dying gasps of the camera. Video’s constitution of the world as image is laid bare.

In "cave construct", a woman enacts a ritual of developing a cocoon or cave like structure out of one sided plastic bags. sadescription Contemporary Cemeteries
3mn57   color   stéréo   2010   Bosnia-Herzegovina
by Igor Bošnjak
"While watching this video it is impossible to divide the art from the reality the artist happens to live. It’s not just about Bosnian art which apparently is incapable to communicate with the west art system; better, it shows the view that the west art system has toward Bosnian art, as if it was dying because nobody cares about it, art which is talking to the western world from a cemetery. This can recall Bosnian society as well and what happened to the country during the last war, when western world pretended not to see what was going on. But Bosnian art is still alive, it's actually giving some signals to the west. Those videos are still working, they are still giving signals, even if it’s a very weak one. Apparently the problem is that the west world just cannot get this signal, it misses the code through which it could get a clear image of the country, in order to understand it. Curators from the west, together with art critics, galleries, museums, etc, have to find a way to rescue Bosnian art before it is too late, before that signal dies like all those 97.000 people died during the war." sadescription Crossing
31mn54   color   stéréo   2009   Netherlands
by Frans Van Lent
The work "Crossing" is a confrontation of two different time-structures. On one hand there is a repetitive form, the track of the car with "on the rear-seat" the public. On the other hand there is my performance, a linear time-structure : passing ± 5 meters of street in 30 minutes time. The public is confronted with different stages of this performance only five times during their trip. Further on they know the performance is going on in their absence. The crossing is so slowly (only a few millimeters every step), that for the carpassengers it is not noticeable as actually "moving". It is not a work for looping as an installation. It is really meant for screening and watching it the 31 minutes. If you decide to show it, please show it in that way.

by Guy Bordin & Renaud De Putter
Through the fate of two Samoan fa’afafine (« transvestites »), the film evokes a certain distance to the world, between contemplation and renouncement. This attitude finds itself in correspondence with that, enigmatic, of a young girl who lives at the end of a remote village. The directors invite us here to an impressionistic rediscovery of the ancient myth of Daphne’s metamorphosis in the Polynesian context.

by Shahar Marcus
In pre-ultrasound days, doctors determined whether a woman was pregnant through a "frog test". For this procedure, the woman's urine was injected into the body of the frog, and from the frog's physical reaction the gynecologist would have an answer. A steady supply of frogs was needed to supply these answers, and the artist's father made his living fishing swamps for this very purpose. In the context of this procedure, the frog's body is the indicator of either life or absence. The video "frog test" is an artistic interpretation to those facts.

The light pixels in the night are inspired by the mythological story of the two lovers Hero and Leander. Hero was an Aphrodite priest in Sestos at the Hellespont strait, which her lover Leander from Abydos swam through every night to be with her. Hero put a lamp for Leander to light up his way through the strait. One night the light went out during a storm: Leander got lost in the sea and drowned. As Hero discovered Leanders dead body the next morning, she leaped off a cliff and died. The video work by Jérôme Thomé transforms the issue in abstract light and sound signals.

Lilong settlement is a low-rise, ground-related housing pattern, typical of Shanghai. Characterized by a strong sense of neighbourhood and cohesiveness, this typology of estate, constituted by two or more blocks of flats with an inner courtyard, has constituted the prevalent choice of Shanghai inhabitants until 1949. Today, as the urban restyling is taking place, the Lilong typology is quickly disappearing forcing its inhabitants to use public parks for daily physical exercise, variations on Thai Chi and traditional singing. While the urban and human geography of Shanghai is changing and these social activities are performed mainly by elderly people, parks become also stages for fragmented “solo” performances. My video is a peculiar collection of individual portraits, of ambiguous repetitive gestures, shadowed by images of high-rise buildings and bird’s eye views of playgrounds. Whether or not these images are a realist representation of common individual workout, at the same time, they suggest a sense of loss and isolation, confinement and detachment.

"Losing Ground" is a critique of urban sprawl and the resulting erosion and homogenization of the countryside across the world. With its negation of city history, of geographic particularities, and thus of cultural memory, this standardized urbanization imposes its amnesia, individualistic lifestyle, and jarring presence in nature. Filmed in Quartier DIX30 in Brossard, the biggest lifestyle center in Canada, the video sounds out recently man-made territories so as to decipher humanity’s relationships with the environment. It confronts us with the dizzying spectacle of our diminishing local references, as they give way to cultural stereotypes, now become universal through globalization.

sadescription Mala apokalipsa

by Alvaro Petricig
"Mala apokalipsa" (Minor Apocalypse) is neither a documentary nor fiction. Paradoxically, it could be defined as "science-fiction documentary", for it is based on a true story – the death of a village. Cisgne is (was) a small settlement in the Nadiža / Natisone Valleys which, similarly to many other mountain or remote settlements, was left to abandonment and ruin by the economic reasoning of our modern lifestyle. The last inhabitants left Cisgne after the earthquake in 1976 when the abandonment of the village and transfer to other settlements in the valley below was imposed on the village dwellers as the only possible solution even though their village only suffered minor damages. The story is a patchwork of testimonies and memories of the village’s daily life and its destiny, with deeply involving and even painful memories awoken by images as persistent as nightmares and almost corroded by the very substance of the memory itself, combined with intuitive reflections on the meaning of time in a village in ruin which may arise in an "outsider", uninfluenced by the life stories of those involved. When apocalypse approaches settlements such as Cisgne, it comes quietly, without a proper announcement, for the events occurring at the very "periphery of an empire" are of no interest to anybody. What is visible to the eye is insatiable vitality with which nature, indifferent to major or minor events in the village’s history, burries and destroys the traces of human experience. Meanwile, many Cisgnes in the Nadiža / Natisone Valleys await a similar fate.

"Music Video for a Pop Song" is a video set to a manipulated version of Britney Spears’ breakout hit "Baby One More Time". The piece addresses the intersection of sexuality, gender, popular culture, beauty, and the grotesque. "Music Video for a Pop Song" depicts three simultaneous videos of heavily rouged lips. As the audio shifts from the genuine song to a slower version, the videos fall in and out of sync with the sound. As a result, the piece exists in a liminal space between connection and disconnection, beautiful and grotesque, masculine and feminine.

Gratuitous Art Films is a collaborative art project that finds the connections and inflections between today’s audience and yesterday’s bully pulpit. Gratuitous techniques have been keystones in both propaganda and film making in the 20th century and over time, connotations -symbolic, political or otherwise- allow us to manipulate sound and images to gratuitously inflict our own narrative and connotations. We at Gratuitous Art Films dig deep into the trenches of obscura ephemera, sourcing from over 65 years of public domain material ranging from the propaganda of the Prelinger archives to the wax cylinders in Thomas Edison’s Attic. The very sources of the material form a foundational context that allows these short films to work with so many layers. The corporate lens and the time of its conception make each film source a treasure trove of metaphor and social relevance.   Pieced together through modern cynicism and progressive design aesthetics, a dry dark wit extends a hand and slaps you across the face. Some of it is recognizable as the advertorial campaigns, or entertainment of our youth. Others are lost beacons of amateur video capturing decaying Kodak moments of our lives, doubly sweet for the treasure trove of glitches that are the lost trademarks of the non-digital film era.   The dated sources of material form a familiar pallet, offering incredible production values and a temperament that would be nearly impossible to reproduce today. From hair and make up to dance productions, the type of footage we use in our films produces a desaturated sanguine that borders on bittersweet mental illness.

There are countless anonymous networked cameras that broadcast publicly over the Internet. The minutiae of these tiny vignettes become rhythmic micro-narratives, dramatizing temporary and fleeting moments that are ordinarily invisible in our experience of everyday life.

he main idea of the film was to release the images from childhood. That was done by creating one consistent atmosphere. The film is designed by the principle of associations - the birth of a surprise, or just logically impossible sight.

A sequence of images, appearing to be drawings and paintings, ends with the photograph of two men beside the corpse of a dead animal. The weapon used in the killing is also proudly displayed. There is a contrast between aesthetic and documental imagery from almost abstraction to something portraying a real event. The pictures are remembrance of the exoticisms of colonialism and the relationship of man with beast, hunter and the hunted, which somehow never seems to change.

This work considers modes of exhibition (specifically the pedestal), traditional standards of exhibiting art, and the implied conformism of such standards. In video performance, the MBC appropriates pedestals, transforming them into cohorts in a series of video studies focusing on spontaneous movement, primary color, organic and inorganic shapes, and the relationship between the animate and the inanimate. Each video work became part of a larger video “quilt” of simultaneous, yet independent parts--a colorful, ecstatic display of patterned chaos.

In this piece, we build structures that are at once ordered and precarious, purposeful and purposeless. In the process, we rearrange the space in infinite ways, revealing the method by which humans often pack and unpack, arrange and rearrange space, construct and deconstruct, and build and rebuild following collapse. From the everyday to the metaphoric, this work is a consideration of human perseverance, industriousness, and the often ludicrous business in our everyday lives.

sadescription Translation
1mn04   color   mono   2009   Italy
by Silvia Giambrone
This writing performance inquires into the dynamics among language, the law and body. The starting point lies in the idea that language-and the law as linguistic expression-is able to represent and give expression to reality in a clear and comprehensive way. This entails a direct and mutual relation between that which is represented and the language that one uses to represent it, between words and things, between the law and facts. In alternative (way to look at this dynamic )a different stand point emphasizes the ever paradoxical dimension of language; that is the impossibility of language to represent faithfully the real. It is in this direction that one should think of the law as well as a linguistic expression unable to remain faithful to itself, always betraying itself. In this regard the first commandment provides us with a useful example of both a linguistic expression and its inability to absolve the very communicative and injunctive function that it involves. The simple transpose of the common biblical tradition from one language to another, from a form of writing to another, implies in its essential writing action a twofold effect of translation and betrayal: one hand betrays the other in a simple and simultaneous work of translation. The uniqueness that “(there is)no god but God” entails is thereby transgressed and fragmented in a series of signs following the asynchronic rhythm of the hands, a dance, rather than the invocation of meaning that the first commandment aspires to exert.

sadescription unsettled
1mn03   color   stéréo   2010   USA
by Sarah Buckius
In this piece, I incessantly construct precarious structures using numerous cardboard boxes. In my failing attempts to create a stable foundation, I pile boxes to the point of collapse. When the assemblages succumb to their unstable fabrication, I begin rebuidling… over and over and over again. The incessant process, the instability of the structure, and the use of cardboard boxes work together to simulate the feeling of being «unsettled». The kaleidoscopic dynamism highlights the repetitious, frenetic nature of an perpetual feeling of instability. Not only does this piece suggest the feeling of instability in everyday life, but also in the current cultural context (architectural infrastructure in natural disasters (recent earthquake in Haiti) and the current national and global enconomic crisis.) This piece can be viewed playing on a monitor, projected onto a wall, or installed as a large pile of cardboard boxes onto which the video is be projected.

4mn48   color & b/w   stéréo   2009   France
by Antoine Miserey
This video is built according to a (very) free adaptation of the television film Gilles Deleuze's alphabet primer realized by Pierre-André Boutang and Claire Parney (1988-89/1996), and more particularly of the letter "D", "Desire". The soundtrack, a feminine voice(vote), quotes Deleuze. Antoine Miserey realizes here a video consisted of fragments of films which evoke personal, amateur films, memories (souvenirs) of holidays in the minimal narrative contents. The "heroines" ("heroin") of these short histories are feminine faces (figures) which appear by moment and which seem to be the objects of this desire, the subject of which would be the voice-over, another woman. It is thus question of escaped (fleeting) desires of a woman for women, in particular environments which are appropriate (clean) for them, the "layouts" ("organizations") about which speaks Deleuze. This video can so appear as a continuation (suite) of memories (souvenirs). The title, a mark (brand) of beer, in the rough tones, evokes maybe on the contrary the rough drive, and between contrasts it with the gently nostalgic contents of the video. Emilie Bouvard
