"SHOOT-FILM" Ventana abierta al mundo o re-interretación de BECKETT'S FILM

by Rrose

Series: Video without-camera, reinterpreting "camera-world" Berkeley theory "to be is to be perceived". The contraposition of images from my window as "window on the world" through the myth of transparency (film metaphor proposed by Andres Hipano) with images of Film by Samuel Beckett. Overlaying the gaze open to the world with the actions of the man who flees from being perceived. This coming together in the final view that transforms the theme "to be is to be perceived" by "not to be is to be perceived" with the eye of the lens as a destroyer of the visible.

"A Fundamental Error" is a retake on my portrait of Kubelka Surfaces - Peter (tube), in which I reshot his face off a tube screen. Here I delve into its hexadecimal code so that it degenerates even further. The champion of analog cinema, the meticulous montage artist, thus becomes an utterly unpredictable dance of digits and codes.

self-production
distribution : Groupe Intervention Vidéo
This video explores the subject of vulnerability and transparency by way of speech impediments (stuttering) and the mechanics of speech - breath, muscle tension, rhythm, effort. It is an investigation of what happens in the head and body when speech is no longer natural. Driven by self-reflection through personal experience and physical/emotional states, my intention is for the work to transcend the personal into the universal search for vulnerability. This project is part of a multi-layered, performance-based study on vulnerability.

They laugh at our tears and invent a world without human beings. Sitting on the spine of the cosmos, they ensure they are AMOK.

On a global playground, without bounds, the cat’s body is devoured, exploited and controlled - its fear of pain being stronger than its longing for freedom. Objects are fetishized and subjects made into things that are quantifiable and ready for use. They are the natural resources of a luxury they will never know. We are here because you were there – and 1 waste is dumped in the ocean. In the end, bodies reveal the causes and effects of power, pleasure and hate.

A place super charged by our shared past. microstructures in the light identified with my memories of this place, the people, the events and their connection to the present. Sounds of the wind. the gentle foraging of chickens. playful guitar practicing by my daughter lexie sitting beside me. If this place and memory and time have an iridescence, could I find a way to preserve it eyes left; the garden. Eyes right; the chickens. eyes forward; lexie and the guitar. “it’s a film!,” I exclaimed and I leapt to my feet to find my bolex camera. wind the camera, shoot left. wind the camera, shoot right. wind the camera, shoot forward. a single 100ft roll shot in that moment. Hand processed and toned on that afternoon. a bright moment that could have been lost forever brought back to life by a projector bulb in the barn that evening. a moment i can hold in my hand. A moment needing only to be held up to the light to be shared.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." R. Buckminster Fuller. The main trigger concept is what we call here decrescita felice, degrowth, focusing on sustainability. Chronoscope is apparently a way to see the past, but what if the past tells us more about the future than we usually think? We are now in a point where we should just take a step back. Ephemeralization is not the answer maybe, but this ephemeral symbol, the butterfly, stands for self-organizing, self-regulated, self-sufficient - but never fixed or rigid - systems in nature, that can help us to reimagine an ecological approach.

Contact is one of a series of videos made up of shots from more than 60 films from the Chinese Cultural Revolution period. These videos are not only reexaminations of the cinema of that period but also reflections of history as told through cinema. Contact examines the moments of emotional climax when the ordinary people rise up to become the sublime subjects of Ideology by means of corporeal touch like shaking hands and hugging. The shots extracted from these films are kept at its original length and the artist argued that while working on such a critical subject, keeping the integrity of the shot is the least he can do, in a moral way.

We were asked to write and interpret a demonic monologue digging into some personal anecdotes. My own was pretty cathartic. Sources of inspiration were Innocenzo Spinazzi’s marble statue, La Religione aka La Velata, now at GAM museum and Cesare Lombroso, the Museum of Criminal Anthropology and one of his seminal texts, The criminal woman: the prostitute, the normal woman (1893). "Deux femmes (for Man Ray)" creates a dialogue with Man Ray’s porno footage that was found in his atelier after his death in a canister titled “Deux Femmes”, shot in 1937. Man Ray’s preoccupation with the female body as sculpture and the imminence of amateur pornography today, were what necessitated a dialogue to me. Adhering to his particular compositions and actions within them, I collected matching shots from online amateur pornos. Then I printed the frames, and presented them in the video as a paper stack. This unhurried process of paper stacking slows down the otherwise speedy porn media consumption and allows us to examine the female body as sculpture today.

A filmmaker and a dancer meet in the same location twice a day - once in the early morning, once in the late afternoon - for five consecutive days. They create a series of ten in-camera 16mm films: a piece that maps the progression of improvised dance and cinematography and their collaborative relationship. Both artists untether their training in premeditated construction and make, act, compose, move, see, and interact in the moment. Can the camera act as a dynamic partner, more than simply a new "stage" or documenting device for the dancer? Can the dancer be more than a subject embedded within the frame and altered by the cut?

This video is an analytical montage of shots extracted from more than 60 films from the Chinese Cultural Revolution period. It exclusively studies the moments of the interpellation of the Ideology (Louis Althusser) which are represented physically by music, words, gazes, gestures and situations found in these films. I keep every shot at its original length because the shot is the minimal unit of the cinema. When we work on such a critical subject, keeping the integrity of the shot is the least we can do, in a moral way. Strictly speaking, Ecstasy does not lend itself to a specific synopsis, but this does not mean that there is nothing to look at in it. The multiple symbols and meanings extracted from a wide range of shots make up the narratives found in this video: The resemblance of the music in different films, the dramatic gazes with catchlights (like they are absorbed by an overwhelming feeling of great excitement, where the title Ecstasy comes from), the repetition of the words (like ‘Mao Zhuxi’, Chairman Mao), the robotic gestures (raising one’s head, turning around), the faces with tears, the symbolic objects which reincarnate the transmission of ecstasy (like needle, spanner and apple) and the exaggerated film techniques (close-up, zoom in). This video is one of a series of videos and they are not only reexaminations of the cinema of that period but also reflections of history as told through cinema.

A group of young Ethiopians is gathering in a hall. Some of them instruct the others what to do by calling them by their names. Each student faces the camera for a moment. Later, other formations inside the hall are taken, which happens through performative actions: new shoes are put on, a starting line is marked on the floor and the group gets ready to start a race. The young Ethiopians represent a new generation outside of the western world, and our gaze must withstand their powerful presence.

This film depicts a geographical, architectural, and urban research of a specific area in Shanghai. The reason why I chose to depict this area is that it strongly resembles the Grand Palais area in Paris. From an emotional standpoint, I have a deep attachment to both cities, having lived in both for many years. On the more practical side, I have made this film to express my concerns regarding the urbanization and globalization of Shanghai, elements of which have turned Shanghai into a science-fiction like landscape through the blending of pre-industrial and hypermodern elements. The images presented in this film are not meant to be viewed passively, I want the audience to observe and think through the subject matter freely.

SHOT is an experimental film that tries to make formal sense out of senseless violence. Footage was found from every police shooting over the last two years for which there is available video. Each piece of footage is taken unedited, and aligned -- synchronised to the moment of the first gunshot. The lm is a moving composite, modelled after the composite photographs used by criminologists in the 19th century to try to understand the archetypical thief, rapist, murderer. The end result is an uncanny wave of terror, violence, and outrage.

A young man from Montpellier performs "Wild World" by Cat Stevens. The pictorial aspect suggested by the backdrop evoking nature in terms of fauna and flora, combined with the classical references hinted at by the floral crown worn by the singer, associated with pagan gods, conjure up the savage and Dionysian side of the world. This is echoed by the title of the song and reminds us that the destiny of human beings lies beyond their control, at the mercy of external forces.

Solastalgia is a concept created by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht to define a feeling of unease tied to the upheavals and mutations we are experiencing today. It is the homesickness we may feel when we are still at home, but our familiar surroundings have grown strange to us. Nowadays, this state of loss of bearings seems to become generalized under the pressure of heightened development. In the Anthropocene Era, affected as we are by the rising world population, climate change, and the transformation of our ecosystems, this may be a form of latent distress that haunts us all.

The work uses the complete transcribed text of the June 2014 orientation video message as delivered from then Australian Government Immigration Minister Scott Morrison. This "message" was played to detained refugees on Nairu and Manus Island in their attempt to arrive to Australia by boat and subsequent capture and detainment. The similarities of our shared namesake are obvious - this work takes the perhaps humorous coincidence and instead looks to provoke and question notions of privilege, representation and authority. The work acts as a broader portraiture of national identity - when the individual, the politician is removed from the original context does it also represent all Australians as the words are representative of Government mandate? The karaoke styled treatment towards the text offers a visual counterpoint - evoking a paradise filled with hope and burgeoning safe shore - as if in a dream.

Trading stories is in search of clues and tells one or several stories about storytelling and about love. But trading story is no love story. Based on a journey from Hamburg to Qindao in 1905 from the director’s great grandfather, she followed his traces embarking on a containership. Today the route is an important trade lane. Therefore the filmed material is set in a trading context. But in search of the clues the topic evolves sideways into found footage fragments and texts. The story can only be told by using these “sideways” and thus develops into an odyssey on the ocean of symbols, images and feelings. In a collage of the journey’s documentary graphical material, found footage from the internet and films as well as own lyrics and texts from other sources, dimensions and assumed consequences of a globalized, technological and networked world are dealt with on the platform of feelings. The containership’s cargo or load is the cargo and load of the story and all stories as well as the one of love. It becomes the metaphor for the unconscious, a representative of a society’s body, a symbol for the new beginning and the venture of life reflecting its tensions, ambivalences and contradictions. And ambivalence was already the archetype of the ship.

Irena Paskali is seeking in her work "Timeless" for the never changing condition of mankind, the essence of human being. On the one hand, it is the human quest for meaning and wisdom, emblematised by the apple. The little girl, standing on the edge of a small lake, still in the need to find her way into life. Secondly, it is the spirituality of man, who strives for transcendence - depicted by the scenes around the historic center of Ohrid, Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock, Golgatha - it is also about loneliness and being abandoned, impressive staged through the woman, whose face is not visible - and her slow steps upwards the stone stairs.
