A Fundamental Error
3mn25 color stéréo 2016
Spain
by Alberte
Pagán
"A Fundamental Error" is a retake on my portrait of Kubelka Surfaces - Peter (tube), in which I reshot his face off a tube screen. Here I delve into its hexadecimal code so that it degenerates even further. The champion of analog cinema, the meticulous montage artist, thus becomes an utterly unpredictable dance of digits and codes.

Videopoem for the poem 'Aleppo' by Howie Good. Words: Howie Good. Concept, camera, editing, music: Swoon. Soundbites: news bits on Al Jazeera Aleppo. Perhaps if I stay still, very, very still, they will step out from the burning rubble into the last desolate wisps of daylight, and say their names, Mohammed, Jamal, Iman, and tell us exactly when and how they died, whether blown up, or gunned down, or incinerated, so we can apologize before they fade for good, shadows of ghosts, dark matter collapsing inwards, timely making way for the silence of forgetting.

Whilst we remain safe and sound, watching the highest grossing cat fail compilation - all that is kept out of sight gets back to us in this consumerist nightmare. On a global playground, without bounds, the cat’s body is devoured, exploited and controlled - its fear of pain being stronger than its longing for freedom. Objects are fetishized and subjects made into things that are quantifiable and ready for use. They are the natural resources of a luxury they will never know. We are here because you were there – and 1 waste is dumped in the ocean. In the end, bodies reveal the causes and effects of power, pleasure and hate.

Chicken Film
3mn20 color mono 2016
Canada
by Rob
Butterworth
I sat in the shade of a willow tree at the farm. a quite place washed with iridescent cracks of light through leaves. A place super charged by our shared past. microstructures in the light identified with my memories of this place, the people, the events and their connection to the present. Sounds of the wind. the gentle foraging of chickens. playful guitar practicing by my daughter lexie sitting beside me. If this place and memory and time have an iridescence, could I find a way to preserve it eyes left; the garden. Eyes right; the chickens. eyes forward; lexie and the guitar. “it’s a film!,” I exclaimed and I leapt to my feet to find my bolex camera. wind the camera, shoot left. wind the camera, shoot right. wind the camera, shoot forward. a single 100ft roll shot in that moment. Hand processed and toned on that afternoon. a bright moment that could have been lost forever brought back to life by a projector bulb in the barn that evening. a moment i can hold in my hand. A moment needing only to be held up to the light to be shared.

Chronoscope
3mn22 color stéréo 2016
Italy
by Sara
Bonaventura
"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." R. Buckminster Fuller. The main trigger concept is what we call here decrescita felice, degrowth, focusing on sustainability. Chronoscope is apparently a way to see the past, but what if the past tells us more about the future than we usually think? We are now in a point where we should just take a step back. Ephemeralization is not the answer maybe, but this ephemeral symbol, the butterfly, stands for self-organizing, self-regulated, self-sufficient - but never fixed or rigid - systems in nature, that can help us to reimagine an ecological approach.

Ecstasy
12mn42 color & b/w stéréo 2015
China
by Di
Hu
This video is an analytical montage of shots extracted from more than 60 films from the Chinese Cultural Revolution period. It exclusively studies the moments of the interpellation of the Ideology (Louis Althusser) which are represented physically by music, words, gazes, gestures and situations found in these films. I keep every shot at its original length because the shot is the minimal unit of the cinema. When we work on such a critical subject, keeping the integrity of the shot is the least we can do, in a moral way. Strictly speaking, Ecstasy does not lend itself to a specific synopsis, but this does not mean that there is nothing to look at in it. The multiple symbols and meanings extracted from a wide range of shots make up the narratives found in this video: The resemblance of the music in different films, the dramatic gazes with catchlights (like they are absorbed by an overwhelming feeling of great excitement, where the title Ecstasy comes from), the repetition of the words (like ‘Mao Zhuxi’, Chairman Mao), the robotic gestures (raising one’s head, turning around), the faces with tears, the symbolic objects which reincarnate the transmission of ecstasy (like needle, spanner and apple) and the exaggerated film techniques (close-up, zoom in). This video is one of a series of videos and they are not only reexaminations of the cinema of that period but also reflections of history as told through cinema.

SHOT is an experimental film that tries to make formal sense out of senseless violence. Footage was found from every police shooting over the last two years for which there is available video. Each piece of footage is taken unedited, and aligned -- synchronised to the moment of the first gunshot. The lm is a moving composite, modelled after the composite photographs used by criminologists in the 19th century to try to understand the archetypical thief, rapist, murderer. The end result is an uncanny wave of terror, violence, and outrage.

The pictorial aspect suggested by the backdrop evoking nature in terms of fauna and flora, combined with the classical references hinted at by the floral crown worn by the singer, associated with pagan gods, conjure up the savage and Dionysian side of the world. This is echoed by the title of the song and reminds us that the destiny of human beings lies beyond their control, at the mercy of external forces.

Sostalgia
14mn45 color stéréo 2015

by Isabelle
Hayeur
Solastalgia is a concept created by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht to define a feeling of unease tied to the upheavals and mutations we are experiencing today. It is the homesickness we may feel when we are still at home, but our familiar surroundings have grown strange to us. Nowadays, this state of loss of bearings seems to become generalized under the pressure of heightened development. In the Anthropocene Era, affected as we are by the rising world population, climate change, and the transformation of our ecosystems, this may be a form of latent distress that haunts us all.

There is the memory of a bedroom in an apartment on the third floor of a building. There is a reverie of a melancholic love song playing on an airplane, flying towards an island, straddling an ocean and a sea. There is the soft haze of an embargo slowly lifting into the celestial blue.

A painterly collage breaking-up and collapsing into itself, composed from family moments and travelling snippets that intertwine with confused and panicked news reports from terror scenes. Progressing in dream-logic, glitching and morphing unexpectedly, the work explores the affects of shifts in perception, in an increasingly fractured world.

Tension Sketch_3
3mn03 color sil 2015
Australia
by Scott
Morrison
The work uses the complete transcribed text of the June 2014 orientation video message as delivered from then Australian Government Immigration Minister Scott Morrison. This "message" was played to detained refugees on Nairu and Manus Island in their attempt to arrive to Australia by boat and subsequent capture and detainment. The similarities of our shared namesake are obvious - this work takes the perhaps humorous coincidence and instead looks to provoke and question notions of privilege, representation and authority. The work acts as a broader portraiture of national identity - when the individual, the politician is removed from the original context does it also represent all Australians as the words are representative of Government mandate? The karaoke styled treatment towards the text offers a visual counterpoint - evoking a paradise filled with hope and burgeoning safe shore - as if in a dream.

A critical approach towards the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). During a bicycle tour to The Hague we sing a song whose lyrics are based on our research about the development and the pros / cons of this legal institution. Melody and setting are inspired by the movie "Ko to tamo peva", a black comedy about a bus journey to Belgrade just before the bombardment by the German Wehrmacht.

Paskali
"Timeless"... We live in a restless world, which is changing faster than ever. What was true yesterday is already meaningless today. Irena Paskali is seeking in her work "Timeless" for the never changing condition of mankind, the essence of human being. On the one hand, it is the human quest for meaning and wisdom, emblematised by the apple. The little girl, standing on the edge of a small lake, still in the need to find her way into life. Secondly, it is the spirituality of man, who strives for transcendence - depicted by the scenes around the historic center of Ohrid, Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock, Golgatha - it is also about loneliness and being abandoned, impressive staged through the woman, whose face is not visible - and her slow steps upwards the stone stairs.
