Dialogue About a Dialogue: J. L. Borges August 19, 2008 by Sineokov. A: Absorbed in our discussion of immortality, we had let night fall without lighting the lamp, and we couldn’t see each other’s faces. With an offhandedness or gentleness more convincing than passion would have been, Macedonio Fernandez’ voice said once more that the soul is immortal. He assured me that the death of the body is altogether insignificant, and that dying has to be the most unimportant thing that can happen to a man. I was playing with Macedonio’s pocketknife, opening and closing it. A nearby accordion was infinitely dispatching La Comparsita, that dismaying trifle that so many people like because it’s been misrepresented to them as being old. . . . I suggested to Macedonio that we kill ourselves, so we might have our discussion without all the racket. Z: (mockingly) But I suspect that at the last moment you reconsidered. A: (now deep in mysticism) Quite frankly, I don’t remember whether we committed suicide that night or not. [From Collected Fictions, by Jorge Luis Borges, translated by Andrew Hurley]

Both beauty and destruction. Both homage and critique. Sincere insincerity amidst the concrete jungle. "Nature here is vile and base. ... I see fornication and asphyxiation and choking and fighting for survival and growing and just rotting away ... It's a land that God, if he exists has - has created in anger. It's the only land where - where creation is unfinished yet. Taking a close look at - at what's around us there - there is some sort of a harmony..." In the film "2012", fear and desire are constantly oscillating. The camera takes us to the boundary of a closed property. Initially the eye is reluctant to approach even further but curiosity is takes over and forces us to enter the house. Although a warning knock is heard, we devote ourselves to the unknown. We see the body of a restless sleeping man and transcend into his imagination. The immersion into this scenario can be seen as an escape from our bodies. Is it a dream? A time travel? Or is it the longing for the long anticipated apocalypse? Weightless, the viewer moves between reality, illusion and film. The story is about the burden of existence and of the Apocalypse which may have taken place already, without that we have taken note of it. After the dreaming protagonist wakes up, we once again have the perspective of the camera lens and leave the scene, the place of imagination, the place of cinema. Maybe we escaped the Apocalypse?

Filming people without a camera. Compacted, contracted, molded, kneaded, accelerated, multiplied, chained, unchained, exploded, cut up, tortured, ... .. the "Slices of Life" grind up human, to life, to death and to love. A real "shopping of life" among all the shelves of supermarkets and corner stores of the everyday life staging. Film sequences, known or not, they are gone somewhere else to play a score that wasn't their. As in music, the tone of a film is expressed by the force of its own leitmotiv, by the almost hypnotic repetition of the simple measure of his purpose.

“By Blood and Water, By Blood and Sand” is a video montage of two contrasting landscapes - the lush coastal hill country of the South West North Island of New Zealand and the contemporary American South West (with a brief interlude over Siberia). This video includes references of environmental degradation and post-nuclear Armageddon, as suggested by the tropes of dripping blood and large Kafkaesque insects (such as those that populate many post nuclear war horror films). "Wildfire" had touched all areas in the clips of the American South West. Climate change has significantly extended the wildfire season. Meanwhile deep sea drilling and fracking are proceeding unabated in New Zealand. (Soundtrack: "Little Rose" by The Black Twig Pickers, permission by and courtesy of Thrill Jockey)

The absurd depends as much on man as on the world. For the moment it is all that links them together. It binds them one to the other as only hatred can weld two creatures together.” – Albert Camus “I want to do a piece where I go to the Alps and talk to a mountain. The series lends to open compositions in various, complex arrangements based upon the format of the exhibition venue. Visual chandelier displays in shortcut, my diptychs are starting up mew models of ceremonial atmosphere depicting the act through the flagrance to appreciate the apogee of pleasure. They link together composite, complementary entities which deal softly giving away or merging, re-envisioned in velvet colors, in the heart of their creation. The length of the work is naturally one of endurance as echoed into resurrected flashbacks, and thrilling ellipsis. Fiction time was at first going on in real time.

The video hovers tentatively between therapy, documentary, poetics and mystic traipsery and ends, like all good things, in surrender to song. There is a challenge presented––the challenge to engage earnestly with the piece as it requests––to fall into the breathing and pacing presented––and the challenge to view the video as a discrete piece of art at the same time. The piece relies heavily, as so much of my work does, on the text, the disembodied Virgil through which the words become an element both musical, instructive and (due to the absence of image) visual.

The video HISTORY IS NOT MINE, is a direct response to the censorship of the Technologia installation at the event Printemps de septembre in Toulouse in 2012. On this occasion, the installation, combining circular forms of Koranic verses with elements inspired from the Rotoreliefs of Marcel Duchamp had been withdrawn by the organization due to incidents and protests caused by passers-by. In this black and white video, the artist, his back to the camera, is typing the title using hammers. The ribbon alone is red, suggesting that the text appears in letters of blood, in a telescoping of "the beauty of the phrase to write with violence and the difficulty of carrying it out."

This video is done from two letters of Dylan Farrow, his remarks reported by a journalist from Vanity Fair and praise Diane Keaton at the Golden Globes about the career of Woody Allen. Dylan Farrow had the courage to say that incest his adoptive father, Woody Allen, she had suffered as a child. I wanted to relate the violence of a celebration when it is heard by a survivor of incest. When Dylan Farrow recounts a scene of incest in the attic she said that while she was raped watch the electric train his brother, as requested by the rapist. This train long haunted me. And I remembered, after a remark from one of my students, I always considered incest as a form of extermination, extermination in the family. Therefore, the noise of the rails from the documentary by Claude Lanzmann , Shoah. I thought this video after attending a seminar during the Masters Nicole Brenez and after hearing in an online conference, especially when addressing his audience, she encouraged everyone to show misery. I decentered its initial proposal towards violence incest. I was also stimulated by discussions I had with Marc Mercier about violence, violence that each of us contains a becoming that is sublime not be overwhelmed. Finally, the discovery of " Maso and Miso Go Boating " Nadja Ringart , Roussopoulos , Delphine Seyrig and Ioana Wieder at the seminar of Hélène Fleckinger , I was also greatly inspired .

"Isle of Lox"'s second season explores further ramifications resulting from the tensed relationship between framework and identity. Which cut of which image is the true representation of which period of time? Mediaval Spanish mystic and friar Juan de la Cruz, more precisely his poem "The Dark Night", serves as an inspiration and a guideline in the creation of the three episodes "Without Light and Guide", "Senses Suspended" and "Members of the audience". Juan's poem is both, a cry for help and a doxology. The dark night is not only a metaphor, but can also be read in a rather profance way: the disorientation and different forms of anxieties experienced during long winter nights, the longing for light and closeness. The second coming of Lox also marks a change in the apparition of the main performers. Leylox and Krilox have evolved into Leyla and Cristian, whose striking resemblance to "Isle of Lox" Creators Leyla Rodriguez and Cristian Straub can hardly be denied. In "Without Light and Guide" Leyla and Cristian are preparing the setting for a film they're about to shoot. Their main actor is a toy puppy named Dogggy. After doing some research and going underground for a while, Leyla and Cristian start searching the perfect reflection. Finally, soon after the film in film featuring Dogggy begins a saboteur emerges. He tries to fight the video-projection with his flashlight, he's an anti-projector. After a violent (and random) image-editing the screen finally collapses and makes way for a restart.

The relationship of these actions, that are mainly vain, as well as the relationship between spaces, objects, textures and colours, bind the video together to formally explore some mental states one could associate with anxiety. Still, the video is not interested in psychological, but in the formal characteristics of these mental states. Thus, the character in the video is not presented as a particular person, but a body, acting.

Other analogical filters, such as magnifying and distorting ones, old lenses of cameras, cardboard tubes and plastic, glass jars and colored plastics have been used. The tension to the invisible, to the nebulous that passes through the analogical and the filmic, is an aesthetic position that nostalgically jokes with the hyper realism of the contemporary preoccupation with high definition.”

Book of edge of a road movie in the Mediterranean around D S Lazare, crossed space in pictures and in texts. “Lazarus, come forth! ”, relates to the religious practices to the Mediterranean around the bones of Saint Lazare. The film leaves Marseilles, where an old worship of veneration of the relics is continued in the district of the Shopping cart to continue in Cyprus and finally in Béthanie, Al Eizariya in the West Bank, where would have resurrected S Lazare. In opposite direction of the christianization of the first centuries, “Lazarus, like forth!” is a road movie which explores the report with the body, the relics, orality in the catholic contemporary practices, orthodoxe but also in the margins of the ritual monks diffused on the Web. It’s to be left and with the reflections of Blaise Cendrars on the subject, that the film registered voter in documentary test, the cinema of research. Behind S Lazare and the worships which are attached to it still today, appears another subject: how the modern man continues to approach the death and finitudes of the life, for better escaping one moment from it at least.

In 1843 Andrea Lezuo, a carver born in Arabba, Northern Italy, sets sail towards "La Merica" on board the Ehon Ship SONG LYRICS: 00:14:56 --> 00:15:38 "Please come back, this house is waiting for you, please come back, we will stay always together". During the shooting (only internet found footage re-shot) super 8 and 35mm amateur old movies have been used and their frames were physically overlapped to the optics of the camera, determining the transparency of color and brightness.

The work shows a baby playing with a robotic cat toy and the slow process of fascination, fear and ultimately power involved in human-artificial relationships. Today we already live in a Cyborg Reality, where we are actually using mechanical devices to explore and extent the possibilities of our limited haptic reality. We are using technical devices all the time to connect to a part of reality, which is much more relevant and offers us much more possibilities, then we experience within our own space of perception. There always has been a fascination within humans to fetish non-human objects and reflect intimate wishes into them (e.g. Money, Sex Toys, Robots, Zombies). What is in this respect special about machines is our fantasy towards them to be even more perfect living mechanism then us (e.g. in the wish to finally create a artificial intelligence we were promised in science fiction literature). Japanese robot dogs are more cute, less dirty and immortal sources of pleasure, providing all the positive aspects of a house animal, while denying the negative. In this perverted relationship all symbolic wishes are satisfied while the total control remains in the owner and creator of the machine.

The work also relates to the Freudian concept of the childs rejection of the mother(body) as a the primary stage of narcissism and the gateway to the symbolic world, an idea further developed by French psychoanalyst and literature critic Julia Kristina, who suggests that the development of the human language and words are a substitute for the loss of the oneness with the mothers body.

Individual elements from a carrier of visual information have been isolated and used to construct alternative visual reagents. Repetition (in space and in time [and in moderation]) is administered as a binder to tame the wild particles in motion, achieving a golden ratio of the mind's eye. Film was once manufactured and distributed on thin translucent plastic strips rolled on reels. On the strips you could see the individual images that made the film. It came in different formats like Super 8, 16 mm and 35 mm (the size referring to the width of the strips). For this film found Super 8 footage was the source material. It was cut to small pieces and investigated further with other film formats (16 mm & 35 mm) by means of optical printing and reshooting the projected material. After applying this analogue feedback loop for a while the result has been transferred to video and edited further.

Projections exist in the invisible thickness of light. Images travel through space as a beam of light, their existence depending on the surface that catches it. Projection screens have long been a standard support for illusions, carrying the vision of the artist or filmmaker. A conditioned way of looking at projections, or rather certain blindness to the screen, allows for the ethereal play of light to assume the status of materiality. I build video installations that reverse this process.

In New Songdo City, one of South Korea´s Free Economic Zones, we reflect on this development along a settled hard rock melody.

I also wanted to experiment with the nature of our perceptual contact with the world.

An oversized spider leisurely roams along Rosebank Road in the Auckland suburb of Avondale and in Hearne Bay juxtaposed against stop motion images of screams from Grade B horror movies of fictional killer spiders. Of the 35,000 species of spiders described worldwide, only a handful are considered to be dangerous and only 27 are known to have caused human fatalities. The irrational fear of spiders is an apt trope for unfounded fear -in the colloquial sense, “paranoia”, which conditions racism, diffidence and the Hobbesian trap of violence. The 3D digital spiders were modelled on a freeze-dried Avondale spider from the Auckland Museum scanned at Formscan, North Auckland. (Avondale spiders are the spiders that were shipped from Auckland to LA for the movie "Arachnophobia".) They are harmless.

The film as I see it is a deep reflective moody day-dream at the edge of the sea recollecting that which we long for and in the midst of the extensive day-dream considerations occur regarding the relationship of emotions and art. This recollection is paradoxically alternates between exhilarating or uplifting senses to melancholic moments realizing the object of our emotion is always going to boil down to being merely fictional exemplifying the dilemma of emotions and art. Mania plays a role in creating art works and perhaps in life as well with pervasive powers to push ahead but always into a wall. Another notion examined in the film is that of living a life through the lens of camera always 'seeing' and 'remembering' images as psychological ghosts of the past sometimes in pleasant ways and others with profound nagging disappointment. The concept of a calendar is an element in this movie.

While the artist doesn’t film images from reality, Myriam Bessette does collate samples of her own voice — the basis for all the sounds she uses and assembles pictorial constructions on paper. She then scans her drawings and creates media objects that she mounts, colours, animates, sets in motion, ripples, and other-wise bends to her purposes. Far from materializing out of thin air, the image first appears as a tangible, material form. The modulations the artist orchestrates plunge us into an ethereal space composed of waves and images, given organic shape by their curvatures and by their movement across the screen. We are immediately fascinated, and, as our body perceives the transient images, we become their resonating chamber.

Inspired by imaginary journeys, "Wind Up Bird" is a result of an audiovisual collaboration between Sydney artist Katrina Stamatopoulos and Toronto based artist Alexandra Spence. This film is part of an ongoing project that explores the powerful and inextricable link between sound and the moving image. ‘Collecting used footage from eBay, I am always uncertain of its age, content and history. My expectations are lost as I view the films, and a journey begins to a far away land, that appears so close as if it to be dreamt or imagined.’ Katrina Stamatopoulos. ‘Wind Up Bird developed intuitively into a sound world built on undulating waves of static. The sounds, taken from my archives of field recordings and improvisations, beckon with suggestions of melody and memory, creaking, twirling and fragmented.’ Alexandra Spence
