'Driven'
4mn15 color stéréo 2013
Australia
by David Anthony

A stretch of tarmac and concrete lined with motor industry retailing and servicing that professes the sovereignty of the motor car. Exposed as a tangle of pollution, noise and drudgery in daylight, but at night transformed into an erratic landscape where darkness is punctured with floodlights and fleeting headlights.

Dialogue About a Dialogue: J. L. Borges August 19, 2008 by Sineokov. A: Absorbed in our discussion of immortality, we had let night fall without lighting the lamp, and we couldn’t see each other’s faces. With an offhandedness or gentleness more convincing than passion would have been, Macedonio Fernandez’ voice said once more that the soul is immortal. He assured me that the death of the body is altogether insignificant, and that dying has to be the most unimportant thing that can happen to a man. I was playing with Macedonio’s pocketknife, opening and closing it. A nearby accordion was infinitely dispatching La Comparsita, that dismaying trifle that so many people like because it’s been misrepresented to them as being old. . . . I suggested to Macedonio that we kill ourselves, so we might have our discussion without all the racket. Z: (mockingly) But I suspect that at the last moment you reconsidered. A: (now deep in mysticism) Quite frankly, I don’t remember whether we committed suicide that night or not. [From Collected Fictions, by Jorge Luis Borges, translated by Andrew Hurley]

2mn21 b/w stéréo 2012
Austria
by Johannes
Gierlinger
In the film "2012", fear and desire are constantly oscillating. The camera takes us to the boundary of a closed property. Initially the eye is reluctant to approach even further but curiosity is takes over and forces us to enter the house. Although a warning knock is heard, we devote ourselves to the unknown. We see the body of a restless sleeping man and transcend into his imagination. The immersion into this scenario can be seen as an escape from our bodies. Is it a dream? A time travel? Or is it the longing for the long anticipated apocalypse? Weightless, the viewer moves between reality, illusion and film. The story is about the burden of existence and of the Apocalypse which may have taken place already, without that we have taken note of it. After the dreaming protagonist wakes up, we once again have the perspective of the camera lens and leave the scene, the place of imagination, the place of cinema. Maybe we escaped the Apocalypse?

"Time has not been kind to Kasimir Malevich’s painting, Black Square. In 1915 when the work was first displayed the surface of the square was pristine and pure; now the black paint has cracked revealing the white ground like mortar in crazy paving." This film documents a tedious process of dismantling and reassembling 16 mm found footage. The film collage imitates functions of a curtain, while the recorded optical track describes the film's subsequent destruction during its first projection.

"bullfrogs and" was made in collaboration with The Mbira Centre, Harare / musician Albert Chimedza. All images and sound material were gathered onsite at the centre, where the mbira (Zimbabwean thumb piano) is produced. The piece studies and visually pinpoints polyrhythms occurring in the environment of the centre and then sets up an experimental relationship by juxtaposing them with a rehearsal of a composition by Chimedza.

An ode to the absurd, an homage to Bas Jan Ader, and an affirmation of Camus' notion that the absurdity of existence (and not gravity) links mankind to the world. “The absurd is the essential concept and the first truth…. The absurd depends as much on man as on the world. For the moment it is all that links them together. It binds them one to the other as only hatred can weld two creatures together.” – Albert Camus “I want to do a piece where I go to the Alps and talk to a mountain. The mountain will talk of things which are necessary and always true, and I shall talk of things which are sometimes, accidentally true.” – Bas Jan Ader

History is not mine
5mn color & b/w stéréo 2013

by Mounir
Fatmi
The video HISTORY IS NOT MINE, is a direct response to the censorship of the Technologia installation at the event Printemps de septembre in Toulouse in 2012. On this occasion, the installation, combining circular forms of Koranic verses with elements inspired from the Rotoreliefs of Marcel Duchamp had been withdrawn by the organization due to incidents and protests caused by passers-by. In this black and white video, the artist, his back to the camera, is typing the title using hammers. The ribbon alone is red, suggesting that the text appears in letters of blood, in a telescoping of "the beauty of the phrase to write with violence and the difficulty of carrying it out."

Lan
Dressed as a female nurse or medical laboratory employee, the artist situate himself in a laboratory environment singing a “love song” to an absent "baby" while performing an intracytoplasmic sperm injection on a human egg, and then inserting it into a surrogate mothers vagina. The video work investigates the future relationship between gender conceptions and the human procreation in the age of advancements in the field of gene-manipulation and various possibilities of artificial insemination. The work also relates to the Freudian concept of the childs rejection of the mother(body) as a the primary stage of narcissism and the gateway to the symbolic world, an idea further developed by French psychoanalyst and literature critic Julia Kristina, who suggests that the development of the human language and words are a substitute for the loss of the oneness with the mothers body.

Picture Particles

Fleisch
Individual elements from a carrier of visual information have been isolated and used to construct alternative visual reagents. Repetition (in space and in time [and in moderation]) is administered as a binder to tame the wild particles in motion, achieving a golden ratio of the mind's eye. Film was once manufactured and distributed on thin translucent plastic strips rolled on reels. On the strips you could see the individual images that made the film. It came in different formats like Super 8, 16 mm and 35 mm (the size referring to the width of the strips). For this film found Super 8 footage was the source material. It was cut to small pieces and investigated further with other film formats (16 mm & 35 mm) by means of optical printing and reshooting the projected material. After applying this analogue feedback loop for a while the result has been transferred to video and edited further.

An oversized spider leisurely roams along Rosebank Road in the Auckland suburb of Avondale and in Hearne Bay juxtaposed against stop motion images of screams from Grade B horror movies of fictional killer spiders. Of the 35,000 species of spiders described worldwide, only a handful are considered to be dangerous and only 27 are known to have caused human fatalities. The irrational fear of spiders is an apt trope for unfounded fear -in the colloquial sense, “paranoia”, which conditions racism, diffidence and the Hobbesian trap of violence. The 3D digital spiders were modelled on a freeze-dried Avondale spider from the Auckland Museum scanned at Formscan, North Auckland. (Avondale spiders are the spiders that were shipped from Auckland to LA for the movie "Arachnophobia".) They are harmless.

Even if a couple looks like a happy unity on the outside, on the inside each member may try to nullify the other. Editing and manipulating found footage from a musical film, this work gives a visual representation of the division in a couple in contrast with the love ideal background of Hollywood films.

Video Pagus Mundi III
2mn03 b/w stéréo 2012
Italy
by Paride
Di Stefano
The "video Pagus Mundi III" belongs to a series of videos entitled "Pagus Mundi". In the video we see many images that appear and move according to the sounds generated by a mixer for cement. The sound is cut and re-organized and carries the rhythm of the entire video. The video is a view of the landscape from a different perspective, like in a dream where consciousness is lost in the depths of irrationality.

Brooks
Morrison's sun soaked abstractions have been intertwined with Brooks' piano improvisations. These recordings have been captured, re-rendered and stitched into Morrison's footage to create a unifying, elevating composition of light and sound. The video's soundtrack is a mixture of this soundtracked ambience and the field recording of the locations in which the video was created.

The subjects in this film are characters of their own worlds, their own realities. Observing from afar, you are a hidden witness. Inspired by imaginary journeys, "Wind Up Bird" is a result of an audiovisual collaboration between Sydney artist Katrina Stamatopoulos and Toronto based artist Alexandra Spence. This film is part of an ongoing project that explores the powerful and inextricable link between sound and the moving image. ‘Collecting used footage from eBay, I am always uncertain of its age, content and history. My expectations are lost as I view the films, and a journey begins to a far away land, that appears so close as if it to be dreamt or imagined.’ Katrina Stamatopoulos. ‘Wind Up Bird developed intuitively into a sound world built on undulating waves of static. The sounds, taken from my archives of field recordings and improvisations, beckon with suggestions of melody and memory, creaking, twirling and fragmented.’ Alexandra Spence

« I love your eyes, my darling friend, Their play, so passionate and bright’ning, When a sudden stare up you send, And like a heaven-blown lightning, It’d take in all from end to end. But there’s more that I admire: Your eyes when they’re downcast In bursts of love-inspired fire, And through the eyelash goes fast A somber, dull call of desire… » - Fiodor TIOUTTCHEV
