A stretch of tarmac and concrete lined with motor industry retailing and servicing that professes the sovereignty of the motor car. Exposed as a tangle of pollution, noise and drudgery in daylight, but at night transformed into an erratic landscape where darkness is punctured with floodlights and fleeting headlights.

Dialogue About a Dialogue: J. L. Borges August 19, 2008 by Sineokov. A: Absorbed in our discussion of immortality, we had let night fall without lighting the lamp, and we couldn’t see each other’s faces. With an offhandedness or gentleness more convincing than passion would have been, Macedonio Fernandez’ voice said once more that the soul is immortal. He assured me that the death of the body is altogether insignificant, and that dying has to be the most unimportant thing that can happen to a man. I was playing with Macedonio’s pocketknife, opening and closing it. A nearby accordion was infinitely dispatching La Comparsita, that dismaying trifle that so many people like because it’s been misrepresented to them as being old. . . . I suggested to Macedonio that we kill ourselves, so we might have our discussion without all the racket. Z: (mockingly) But I suspect that at the last moment you reconsidered. A: (now deep in mysticism) Quite frankly, I don’t remember whether we committed suicide that night or not. [From Collected Fictions, by Jorge Luis Borges, translated by Andrew Hurley]

Both beauty and destruction. Both homage and critique. Sincere insincerity amidst the concrete jungle. "Nature here is vile and base. ... I see fornication and asphyxiation and choking and fighting for survival and growing and just rotting away ... It's a land that God, if he exists has - has created in anger. It's the only land where - where creation is unfinished yet. Taking a close look at - at what's around us there - there is some sort of a harmony..." In the film "2012", fear and desire are constantly oscillating. The camera takes us to the boundary of a closed property. Initially the eye is reluctant to approach even further but curiosity is takes over and forces us to enter the house. Although a warning knock is heard, we devote ourselves to the unknown. We see the body of a restless sleeping man and transcend into his imagination. The immersion into this scenario can be seen as an escape from our bodies. Is it a dream? A time travel? Or is it the longing for the long anticipated apocalypse? Weightless, the viewer moves between reality, illusion and film. The story is about the burden of existence and of the Apocalypse which may have taken place already, without that we have taken note of it. After the dreaming protagonist wakes up, we once again have the perspective of the camera lens and leave the scene, the place of imagination, the place of cinema. Maybe we escaped the Apocalypse?

Filming people without a camera. Compacted, contracted, molded, kneaded, accelerated, multiplied, chained, unchained, exploded, cut up, tortured, ... .. the "Slices of Life" grind up human, to life, to death and to love. A real "shopping of life" among all the shelves of supermarkets and corner stores of the everyday life staging. Film sequences, known or not, they are gone somewhere else to play a score that wasn't their. As in music, the tone of a film is expressed by the force of its own leitmotiv, by the almost hypnotic repetition of the simple measure of his purpose.

"Bodies of Water" combines the fluidity of life drawing with video footage of urban reflections in water. It intertwines narratives of human journeys with those of travelling waters in a vivid expression of colour, energy, and motion. Animated figures of rippling water portray an ongoing flow of humanity, a testament to both constant change and continued endurance. A wide range of emotion is conveyed by the fluctuating character of the water, and through the posture and movements of the individuals.

“By Blood and Water, By Blood and Sand” is a video montage of two contrasting landscapes - the lush coastal hill country of the South West North Island of New Zealand and the contemporary American South West (with a brief interlude over Siberia). This video includes references of environmental degradation and post-nuclear Armageddon, as suggested by the tropes of dripping blood and large Kafkaesque insects (such as those that populate many post nuclear war horror films). "Wildfire" had touched all areas in the clips of the American South West. Climate change has significantly extended the wildfire season. Meanwhile deep sea drilling and fracking are proceeding unabated in New Zealand. (Soundtrack: "Little Rose" by The Black Twig Pickers, permission by and courtesy of Thrill Jockey)

The absurd depends as much on man as on the world. For the moment it is all that links them together. It binds them one to the other as only hatred can weld two creatures together.” – Albert Camus “I want to do a piece where I go to the Alps and talk to a mountain. The video HISTORY IS NOT MINE, is a direct response to the censorship of the Technologia installation at the event Printemps de septembre in Toulouse in 2012. On this occasion, the installation, combining circular forms of Koranic verses with elements inspired from the Rotoreliefs of Marcel Duchamp had been withdrawn by the organization due to incidents and protests caused by passers-by. In this black and white video, the artist, his back to the camera, is typing the title using hammers. The ribbon alone is red, suggesting that the text appears in letters of blood, in a telescoping of "the beauty of the phrase to write with violence and the difficulty of carrying it out."

"Isle of Lox"'s second season explores further ramifications resulting from the tensed relationship between framework and identity. Which cut of which image is the true representation of which period of time? Mediaval Spanish mystic and friar Juan de la Cruz, more precisely his poem "The Dark Night", serves as an inspiration and a guideline in the creation of the three episodes "Without Light and Guide", "Senses Suspended" and "Members of the audience". Juan's poem is both, a cry for help and a doxology. The dark night is not only a metaphor, but can also be read in a rather profance way: the disorientation and different forms of anxieties experienced during long winter nights, the longing for light and closeness. The second coming of Lox also marks a change in the apparition of the main performers. Leylox and Krilox have evolved into Leyla and Cristian, whose striking resemblance to "Isle of Lox" Creators Leyla Rodriguez and Cristian Straub can hardly be denied. In "Without Light and Guide" Leyla and Cristian are preparing the setting for a film they're about to shoot. Their main actor is a toy puppy named Dogggy. After doing some research and going underground for a while, Leyla and Cristian start searching the perfect reflection. Finally, soon after the film in film featuring Dogggy begins a saboteur emerges. He tries to fight the video-projection with his flashlight, he's an anti-projector. After a violent (and random) image-editing the screen finally collapses and makes way for a restart.

The work shows a baby playing with a robotic cat toy and the slow process of fascination, fear and ultimately power involved in human-artificial relationships. Today we already live in a Cyborg Reality, where we are actually using mechanical devices to explore and extent the possibilities of our limited haptic reality. We are using technical devices all the time to connect to a part of reality, which is much more relevant and offers us much more possibilities, then we experience within our own space of perception. There always has been a fascination within humans to fetish non-human objects and reflect intimate wishes into them (e.g. Money, Sex Toys, Robots, Zombies). What is in this respect special about machines is our fantasy towards them to be even more perfect living mechanism then us (e.g. in the wish to finally create a artificial intelligence we were promised in science fiction literature). Japanese robot dogs are more cute, less dirty and immortal sources of pleasure, providing all the positive aspects of a house animal, while denying the negative. In this perverted relationship all symbolic wishes are satisfied while the total control remains in the owner and creator of the machine.

Dressed as a female nurse or medical laboratory employee, the artist situate himself in a laboratory environment singing a “love song” to an absent "baby" while performing an intracytoplasmic sperm injection on a human egg, and then inserting it into a surrogate mothers vagina. The video work investigates the future relationship between gender conceptions and the human procreation in the age of advancements in the field of gene-manipulation and various possibilities of artificial insemination. The work also relates to the Freudian concept of the childs rejection of the mother(body) as a the primary stage of narcissism and the gateway to the symbolic world, an idea further developed by French psychoanalyst and literature critic Julia Kristina, who suggests that the development of the human language and words are a substitute for the loss of the oneness with the mothers body.

In early September 1995 the Sunrise Wildfire was extinguished. 7,000 acres had burned during the peak of the tourist season yet nobody was killed. The aggravated assault swept from one side of Sunrise Highway to the other without the slightest hesitance. Another series of severe brush fires ignited 17 years later and became known as the Brookhaven Blaze. The outbreak left around 2,000 acres torched. The wild ruin and regrowth were revisited within The Central Pine Barrens, the largest natural area on Long Island and its last remaining wilderness. Sound: Ryan Marino.

An oversized spider leisurely roams along Rosebank Road in the Auckland suburb of Avondale and in Hearne Bay juxtaposed against stop motion images of screams from Grade B horror movies of fictional killer spiders. Of the 35,000 species of spiders described worldwide, only a handful are considered to be dangerous and only 27 are known to have caused human fatalities. The irrational fear of spiders is an apt trope for unfounded fear -in the colloquial sense, “paranoia”, which conditions racism, diffidence and the Hobbesian trap of violence. The 3D digital spiders were modelled on a freeze-dried Avondale spider from the Auckland Museum scanned at Formscan, North Auckland. (Avondale spiders are the spiders that were shipped from Auckland to LA for the movie "Arachnophobia".) They are harmless.

A pregnant woman is surrounded by mythical creatures in a pagan ritual celebrating fertility and forces of life and sexuality. Addressing the archaic Venus sculptures made in the dawn of human evolution (ref. Venus of Willendorf c. 28,000-23,000 B.C.), the video investigates our past and contemporary relationship with the image of the pregnant female body, through a reading of the Freudian concept of the childs rejection of the mother(body) as a the primary stage of narcissism and the gateway to the symbolic world.

The subjects in this film are characters of their own worlds, their own realities. Observing from afar, you are a hidden witness. Inspired by imaginary journeys, "Wind Up Bird" is a result of an audiovisual collaboration between Sydney artist Katrina Stamatopoulos and Toronto based artist Alexandra Spence. This film is part of an ongoing project that explores the powerful and inextricable link between sound and the moving image. ‘Collecting used footage from eBay, I am always uncertain of its age, content and history. My expectations are lost as I view the films, and a journey begins to a far away land, that appears so close as if it to be dreamt or imagined.’ Katrina Stamatopoulos. ‘Wind Up Bird developed intuitively into a sound world built on undulating waves of static. The sounds, taken from my archives of field recordings and improvisations, beckon with suggestions of melody and memory, creaking, twirling and fragmented.’ Alexandra Spence
