These fractions are the first three in a series that will count 7. Images, gleaned over the years and exposed instinctively gradually met texts that accompanied me during these years. Each fraction is related to a text whose title is an excerpt. These fractions are independent thoughts. Together they form a whole, both self-portrait and testimony. They are composite elements which, taken together, reveal the nature of this journey.

abacuc
83mn b/w stéréo 2014
Italy
by Luca
Ferri
production : lab 80 film
distribution : lab 80 film
ABACUC is a man who weighs 198 kilos. He lives alone in the last house of a dead-end street. He doesn’t speak, and he is the living representation of Piero della Francesca’s paintings. ABACUC is constantly tired, unflappable. His daily routine is repetitive, his life is like a jammed refrain. Obsessive and repetitive, ABACUC is “the last man”, maybe a survivor. He spends his time mostly at the cemetery, in a theme park where famous italian historical locations are reproduced in miniature, or visiting utopian architectures. He receives phone calls from a mechanical voice. His idea of beauty resides, at home as well as outside, in the balance between the elements. He contemplates the formal rigour in brief moments of standstill contemplation. Nothing really excites him, except architectural debrises and ruins. The repeated visits paid by a woman, who stays hidden and with whom he communicates through literary quotes, seems to relieve ABACUC from his catastrophic solitude. But this is only another dead-end road: the female figure is only ABACUC’s double, and he is an eternal King Ubu. « Abacuc » is a film about the monumentality of ruins, where the concreteness of Super 8 film, the story, images and sounds compose a body similar to the one of it’s protagonist.

Together with ANOTHER DAY OF DEPRESSION IN KOWLOON (2012) and THE PLASTIC GARDEN (2013), CLOUDS FALL forms a trilogy that hacked and reworked materials from the video game franchise CALL OF DUTY, unearthing hidden ghosts and poetics while creating evocative parallels through a kind of uncanny observation and navigation in the found virtual landscapes.

The title speaks for itself. Elusive but captivating interplay of two silent figures brings questions about how you place yourself in contact with others and how others perceive you. The context of the conflict is withheld, allowing a viewer to face his/her own emotions and reasons. The setting acts as a hall of mirrors, so each person and movement exists across time and space in several places at once. This story tells that human identity with its perceptions and reflections, is a many-sided and fascinating phenomenon.

This short work utilizes imprints from Soviet-era film leader culled from dozens of films viewed while working as an artist in residence in Dushanbe, Tajikistan in 2014. The material was largely 1980’s-era educational and propaganda films that contained a broad range of content, but had only subtle variations on more or less the same leader. Foregrounding the often ignored hand-written or machine printed artifacts found on leader, the imprints become the primary source material for a psychotronic audio/visual salvo set to an original score.

The correlation between the juxtaposed movies, the sounds and the voices, takes shape in the screen a movie in perpetual questioning and renewal. The technic and the process of electronic iteration make off giving way to a surrealist poetic dimension, a film improvisation.

« Fractions » is a seven part film. Seven sequences, each with a pattern and a reference to a text of a political nature, to create a space for reflection on the scope and responsibility of these images. Between self-portrait and testimony, each fraction is an autonomous thinking, remaining yet necessary to the overall restitution of a personal research on film practice, in correlation with the emancipatory thinking. The images then become a pretext for this reflection, freed from their narrative and documentary nature, the site of a more intimate experience. This work draws the accomplishment of several years of reading, strewed with fleeting moments of reality captured instinctively with my camera, all reworked and remodeled with traditional cinema tools.

How things can change in just fifteen days. (I have hidden an object per day to still life while flowers were being dried). The video is part of my project to revitalize the still life as a genre renewed by the time factor and the movement of the video as a medium. Revisiting the classic genre of still life, inspired by Flemish painting and by Caravaggio's paintings, shapes and colors are enhanced by the light contrasting with the black background. Whereas in paintings subjects are in complete stillness, in videos there is the fourth dimension, time, which gives further metaphorical depth to the image.

The multiplication table which everybody knows is seen as the text which makes us difficult to focus on in the variations with the national anthems, like dissonance of the great powers surrounding the Korean peninsula. The Dadaists’ chaotic age when 'Le Retour a la raison'(film by Man Ray) was made in the early 20th century closely resembles what we look like today. It is a world where things that were simple came complicated and to produce a film is still in this world. To the world and the experimental films, it is necessary to return to reason.

Since 11 March 2011, all living beings is united by fate, a fate such unspeakable order that exile is impossible. The people of Fukushima-Daichi with their identity and history had to leave room for the roots of the disaster. Social issues, natural reality, the original space in the nuclear disaster lose their meaning, become more total abstractions. In the disaster, man and animal species become infinitesimal. Achieving filmic and musical composition « Tiny Wildlife » plays on the multiplicity of reporting entails this upheaval between the micro and macro, between an organic and figurative frame emergences. The drift of the banks, the views under the sea, the sky, or flush with the ground, « Tiny Wildlife » is pictorial and musical expression of this parachuted glance inhospitable land that bears the traces of exile and its alive look that resists in a fragile body-to-body with life remains.

Transitory spaces appear, ephemeral places are set up; these metamorphoses evoke the urban sprawl that replaces rural life with suburban conditions. Those landscapes in mutation reflect the upheavals affectingour living environments and our ecosystems. They hold a mirror to the illusion of having the capacity to build when we do not even have the ability to dwell.

For the better part of the 20th century the riviere St. Maurice in Quebec was considered one of the most polluted rivers in Canada; the most toxic concentration of which went through the 42m falls in the city of Shawinigan. Here, we see the falls and the mist with a vocal mix oscillating between a Greek chorus and a school for “chemistry as a second language” listing a small portion of the toxic or benign chemicals, end products, by products and other compounds that may or may not have made their way into the river, but nonetheless contributed to the river’s noxious reputation.

The first image is of a girl who plays violin. Later, there are monkeys. People climb trees to chase them away. There is a lot of fire. Objects catch fire. A female figure falls and people dance around her. Joy or tragedy. A pig in the city. An airplane taking off. Later on, movements, tours, a train, an underground trip. Still miniature figures resemble a nightmare. The images of dictators enjoying a barbecue closes the scene. The animal, the beef, the blood. This video was made from images of the newscast Sucesos Argentinos (1938-1972).

Sgan-Cohen was my favorite art history teacher at Brooklyn College. He taught the subject like no other professor at the college—with an extremely deep sense of passion and a strong personal connection to the ideas. When I watch this film (which has become creepier over the decades) I can hear his booming voice and staccato Israeli accent. It should be more than obvious that I thought he had a fascinating face, too. Here's looking at you, Dr. Sgan-Cohen!

She plays with words, with interwoven public and political issues; critically thinking over the current picture of society. Her art work comprises philosophical, timeless, ironic and ambiguous thoughts which she brings in correlation with history, recollection, and the collective memory. In distinctly allegorical strain, she argues a culture dominated by short-term memories where past is unexpectedly present.

Virtual images of abandoned stages and theaters are the imaginary set of "actors" in their search for identity, for a role. It all starts with the view on the screen and ends up with the view out of it. By immerging into subjective viewpoints and perspectives observers become the observed ones. A role reversal is staged: the audience as a consumer and as a producer. "State of Stage" is an exploration of different "states" and conditions of stages, places of selfpresentation and self-manifestation. Through its virtual origin "State of Stage" tries to investigate the cinematic, performative and virtual space at the interface of cinema, theater and Internet, but also the question of their overlapping.

TIDELANDS focuses on the distinctive people and landscape of Daebu-island, located in South Korea. It shows men and women from its fishing community sharing their memories related to the sea and the islands before the construction of the Sihwa Wall. This wall - the longest tide embankment in Asia – and the homonymous artificial lake were constructed to improve the local industry and promote urban growth; however, these implementations had a huge impact on the ecological balance of these islands, and therefore over the lives of their inhabitants and traditional cultures. Long, contemplative shots of places and elements from the islands, such as the wide mudflats, fishermen’s abandoned objects and boats, their houses in precarious state, are intertwined with images of the participants talking to the camera. The community was broken up by capitalist growth and the film allows its shattered identity to be slowly uncovered.

Arne Körner makes "small" movies without fantasy, reflections without excessively leading (he leaves this to the viewer in order to draw them in). It requires no “content” in the popular sense, due to his well-formed and masterful imagery which is full of content. VIEW POINTE contemplates an island; the rushing sea, bays, peculiar foliage and buildings are perused. It progresses as if it is a thriller, though it is the objects which are the focus – they create an exciting undertone; they describe, silently coaxing the mystery which the island is hiding.

On January 29th of this year, a 19 year old man hijacked the Dutch news broadcast of the NOS, the biggest news broadcaster of the Netherlands. He got into the studio with a fake gun, demanding airtime to broadcast a message that, according to him, would concern everyone- but it never got to that. The security guard he took hostage on the way in lead him to an empty studio, where cameras were rolling and the microphone was on. Meanwhile, the NOS building was evacuated, and screens went black. For the first time in 60 years the channel did not run the 8-o clock edition of the news. The word spread fast, and the absence of the news became the new news.
